YEa, let's not turn into a mac PC debate. No machine is 100% immune, no matter the OS(so long as it's mainstream). Macs can are not as likely to contract a virsus as not as they do not have as many users as PCs, but far from immune. Heck there's viruses for cell phones and pdas! This is to suggest software for folks to use, that all. Keep it on track and helpful.

^ concur. Its a lot of personal prefrence and has a lot to do with technical and usage levels. More free software: Knoppix- Bootable linux CD. Extremely useful for testing if a problem is hardware or software based and for recovering files from a non-booting ntfs or fat32 partition. www.knoppix.netHijackthis- very popular tool for finding spyware problems that are causing internet browsing issues. just search for it. www.spywareinfo.com - free online activex applet based spyware scan

isn't there a really good registry cleaner out there? that would be a good one to post as well. I jsut can't remember what it's called. www.ccleaner.com would most likely fill your needs there. Free program.

Search for FileHippo to find most of this stuff to download in one place. It doesn't overwhelm you with too many choices either. Good post.

BHO Demon... It looks in your registry and tells you what "Browser Helper Objects" are loaded/what they do/who they were made by/and if they should be blocked/deleted... BHO Demon will also disable the BHO itself, because malware BHO's will enable themselves again. I sugguest deleting any questionable BHO's. http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htmNo updates ATT, dude had a fire, but a quick google should render you any answers you need.

A while back I found a cool website which put all different computer programs on one website. www.majorgeeks.com . All of the free antivirus versions and some of the pay ones are there. Another way to avoid viruses altogether is to go with Linux. There's literally hundreds of versions of the Linux OS floating around. Many of them can be found here: www.madtux.orgI have my PC's hard drive partitioned for using two operating systems. The main partition has Windoze XP on it and the other is Puppy Linux. I like the Puppy Linux because it's light and very powerful. The whole OS is only 98 MB, and can run as a live CD as well. I even have it on one of my USB flash drives. You can find Puppy Linux here: www.puppylinux.com . Enjoy. wizard93

Another good free antivirus program that I've used a good bit is Avira ( http://www.avira.com). They do daily updates and the scanner works really well. It works on Wind0ze and Linux. Also, for compression programs, you absolutely can't beat 7-zip. It's completely free (not a neverending free trial thing) and does literally every type of compression available. It also has a 32 and a 64 bit version. I can personally vouch for the 64 bit version kicking some serious tail (vs WinZip and WinRAR) on extracting large files from .rar archives.

I have been using the free Avast Anti-Virus for about 6 mths or better and I too have had no problems with it. I would recommend it for anyone even if they already an anti virus. I would urge anyone to test it aganist what they have now (including cost) and see what this program is capable of, And it's "FREE"!!!!

No one antispyware program is going to catch all the spyware/malware that is out there. Here's a couple of more that I use on a daily basis. AVG Anti-spyware Free EditionSUPERAntiSpyware Freedownload the free edition. Download'em, install, update run in safe-mode and un-install when done. No need to have them sitting in the background sucking resources. Here's a decent DVD codec pack. I get tired of using the latest "DivX" install all the time. Sometimes you download a movie and don't have the right codec to watch it with. Here ya go. K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

I have found a nifty little version of Mozilla Firefox. It's the new portable edition, Mozilla Firefox Portable Edition is a full-featured browser that's easy to use, has popup-blocking, tabbed-browsing, integrated search, improved privacy, automatic updating and it leaves no personal information behind on the machine you run it on, and it weighs in at 27.2megs. http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portableOne feature it has that goes unnamed on the site is its built-in Java and JavaScript capabilities. Have you ever been on a computer at work and the IT/Admins have removed Java? And you don't have the permissions needed to install it? Now i can get into the HPFF Chat. My flash drive with MFF Portable is my ticket inside.
