Any got a deap recovery program? My puter crashed I reformated and started over losing all the pics of my kids birth to now, any help PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAse

If you hadnt formatted your drive I could have gotton the data with little to no problem, but once you wipe the dripe with a fresh install it's pretty much gone. Not impossible to get back, but you've written over large parts of that drive where data once was. Any attempts at getting your data back will be expensive and or fruitless.

http://www.apple.com

Any computer there comes with apps for most of that on the list and no anti-virus needed.

http://www.ntfs.com/boot-disk.htm

I use this software to boot from, it makes a bootable CD or USB device, scan the hard drive and then recover the files.  I had the exact same situation you are in....I formatted the customers drive then the guy calls back saying he wants his pics, music, docs etc...  I told him I might not be able to recover it, but if I do he'll have to pay extra.  Luckily, I was able to recover the files with no problems.  This was after the re-format and install of Windows XP.

here's a question that I have. I have a couple of computers hooked up on a relatively simple home network. the router that I'm using is a wireless, but I have all of the PCs hardwired together. is there any freeware available to disable or to firewall the wireless connection so that others can't get onto our network?

by the way, If any of you computer savvy guys are willing to help someone out, I have a couple of questions regarding home networks that I was wondering if someone could help me out with.

Oh, and as far as freeware utilities go, I use AVG free myself, and it's been fine for me, all except for a little problem with the vault.

some other freeware ya'll might be interested in:

spyware utilities:

Spybot S&D

Windows defender

AdAware 2008 free version:

Image editing:
Paint.net

word processing:
Abiword

encryption software:
trueCrypt

by the way, I'm looking right now for a freeware version of MaxiVista multiple monitor software. If anyone knows where I can find some, I'd be most interested.

Not bad. A lot of free pdf makers are available in the net. Recently I have found this PDF Creator.  It supports Vista.

CutePDF rapes face.  Been using it for years.  Foxit PDF reader is the best viewer for PDF IMO.  With CutePDF and Foxit, you can create and view PDFs at about 1/10 the size of Adobe's Reader!

This may have been mentioned, but OpenOffice.org is the best Office Suite IMO (considering it costs nothing in relation to your first born for MS Office).

Also, if you are a linux guy like me and like using desktop switching, Dexpot does a pretty good job of getting that working for Windows.

Oh, and if anybody has questions about networking or computers in general hit me up.  That's what I've been doing for a living since I was 9.  I'll be sending Unreconstructed a PM, but since it's like 8 months after he posted it's probably already resolved.

I was just browsing through some older posts and saw some stuff about file recovery.  My 2 favorite data retrievers are:

GetDataBack - http://www.runtime.org
Photorec - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Random stuff:

CD Burning - Deepburner, burnatonce
Network discovery tool (shows all devices on your subnet) - Colasoft Mac Scanner, Angry IP Scanner
Network profile tool (if you have lots of networks to connect to) - Free IP Switcher

I have a crapton of other software too, but this is just what I thought of.

I have used pretty much all the free anti-viruses and am currently loving PCTools program.

http://www.pctools.com/free-antivirus/

I  love the crap out of this defrag program, its fast, you can select which drives you want to defrag, and you can check the box to shut down the comp when it is done.

The download link is at the bottom, they want you to read through all their hype to get to it I guess!
