Ok, I don't want this to devolve into a philosophical/political/Planet X discussion.
I'm just wondering, considering what little it took for ammo supplies to dry up, if 2012 is going to produce the same mass hysteria.
Even though nothing ever went *bang* I thought Y2K was kind of cool. I mean, lots of people were suddenly into prepping which is a good thing. Army Surplus stores were doing great and they deserve a day in the sun every now and then. Sheeple were asking guys like us for advice which is a nice change.
So, I'm wondering what the whole 2012 phenomena is going to produce. I don't so much care about massing additional amounts of everything but I can clearly see where the gear and supplies I normally buy anyway are either going to increase in price or dry up completely. Just like the ammo shortage. I didn't really change my habits, a bunch of clueless newbies for the most part changed them for me.
So what do you guys expect is going to happen socially? Will we see lots more panic buying (especially after the 2012 movie that comes out in November)? Will it be harder to purchase tinfoil because so much is needed for the new anti-alien-brainwashing hat industry?
Are you planning to change your buying habits, not because you think the world's going to end (because really, buying a bunch of batteries and toothpaste probably won't prevent that) but because you anticipate people buying more of everything at the last minute?
Thoughts?

hears how I see it... Y2K was oversensationized by the MSM, it was based off unknown fears that could arise from a computer Glitch, however governements around the world spent billion to hire basic programmsers to go in and change a very few lines of code in computers. It was probably overhyped by various sources in the same way everything is over hyped.
2012 is hardly talked about by the MSM and when it is, it's jokingly at best. 2012 is based off prophetic documentation gathered from numerous cultures around the world and throughout history. Some of these cultures have had other prophecies that have come true. Opponents of the 2012 idea will claim that many people have predicted the end times were comming and were wrong. Others say that the whole idea of predicting future events is just silly, despite our economy uses people who do just this. They watch trends and predict upcomming events. A few have even devolped an algothrythm that is suprisingly acurate, thses people are looked at as brilliant, yet when our ancestors did it, we say it's silly... their just simple barbarians.
Truth is we won't know for certain till 2013, however I have found the less the government talks about something, the more we should be concerned. Your decision will come down to a matter of belief. Facts can be used to prove 2012 is to be feared, and lack of certain evidence is used to dispute it. I don't think 2012 is the end of mankind, that we will all be gone at that time. I think it's going to be a very dark time, a time where people will suffer greaty, perhaps like never before, and I for one will be glad I have prepped as I did.

I guess I'm looking ahead to the day when I need to cycle out -say- my old MREs and resupply with new ones and they're $10 each or some crap like that. If you'd told me three years ago that WWB 9mm was going to cost $30+ at WalMart if you could find it... I'd have told you to either quit smoking it or start sharing it. It's when the sheeple start getting in the way of me doing things the way I've always done them that I start getting irritated. Whether the reasons for their actions are real or imaginary is moot if it starts affecting how I operate.
I look for the frenzy to start right about the time the 2012 movie hits theaters this November.

Actually in Maine, Y2k had some merit as the computer for the DMV was calling all 2000 vehicles a horseless carrage.

I'd like to know where all the generators that flew off the shelves, and never hit the used for sale market, went? Maybe they'll all reappear in 2012?

That's because half the people in Maine drive a horseless carriage.

I think 2012 will go the same way as Y2k, the coldwar nuclear threat, SARs, Swine flu, Bird flu, GM food destruction of the biosphere, the destruction in the ozone layer, the disappearance of pollinating bees, ecomomic melt down, global warming, global dimming etc etc etc. There will be some effects noted (perhaps) but these will be largely self actualizing and feed by the media; but by and large we will all adapt to the situation and things will pass largely unnoticed, just like Y2K.
Have you noticed how there always seems to be a current 'pending disaster'? As soon as we get bored with one, a new threat is pushed into the media. Goverments love it when the population feel threatened, it's easier to pass laws that restrict personal freedoms. OEK

The difference here that I'm seeing so far is that it's not a strictly American phenomenon in its origination, what with the Mayans, Planet X, et al. Also, the entertainment media is picking up the torch in a big way. I count at least four films with at least tertiary if not direct plotlines involving 2012 as Doomsday. The only film I can recall mentioning Y2K was Office Space.
I guess I just want to make sure that if I think I might need something for a potential disaster in the future, I pick it up before 2011 or be prepared to pay a premium. And I'm thinking my longer-term projects of beefing up home security, installing a secondary wood-burner (remember, the world's scheduled to end in December again), generator hook-up, &c. might need to be started on asap. Just in case there's a sheeple frenzy.
What I'm hoping for is a glut of ammunition following this shortage we've been in. Then we could put quite a bit by for the future at lower prices so long as microstamping doesn't screw things up.

End of Days mentioned Y2K. Sort of. Not really from the computer aspect, bur more from the Armageddon aspect.

i tend to find that date-setters (Mayan or otherwise) generally miss the date. If there's a date that warns peo to " be ready by...", then best to be ready well-in-advance of that date. If only for the sake of price-gouging, but also in the event that publicists who use the 'event' to their advantage want to be the one's who are prepared & NOT the mindless sheeople... Um, is my conspiratorial-nature showing? Does it make my butt look big?
