I've shot the living hell outta x54R, I use to flinch waiting for the hit. I tried slip-on buttpads, I tried wearing a jacket while shooting.. one day I took the thing out, and bam 75 rounds later I was barely bruised or hurting.. guess I just "learned" how to hold and shoot the thing.

It takes about 25 or 30 rounds of 54 now before I get the tinglies, a sensation which I've termed "Massage Nagant."

I have the butt pad and the muzzle break, they both were on the Bubba'd M44 when I bought it. With both it has the recoil of a .22, louder than hell though. It was the firsts rifle I've shot with a muzzle break and I though my head was going to explode (without ear protection). I quickly put my plugs in after that. I figure since Bubba hacked off the bayo lugs I may as well leave the break on, it may trick the rifle into think it has the bayonet extended.LOL.

To think people fought wars is sub zero weather with a metal plate on the butt of their rifles.
I use a Limb Saver slip on recoil pad for my Mauser 98K. When I'm shooting 196 grain ammo it helps a lot.

I just shoot mine straight like it came from the arsenal in 1944. Unless you have some problems with your back or something, I say be a man and take it  I'm 185lb 5'11" and to me the Mosin isn't that bad really. I hurt a whole lot worse from my Maverick 88 and buckshot than I do from the Mosin even with heavy ball ammo. |

there's a drop in recoil pad for 15 bux made especially for mosin. I have that and it works great. Also, like other ppl said, hold the rifle tight but allow your upper body to move with the recoil. If you braced your upper body too hard, it'll guarantee a busted shoulder the next day.

My Mosins kicks less than my Savage 30-06, so it really doesn't bother me...much. But I prefer to shoot the light ball 147 grain bullets if I am shooting a lot.  |

I have a M44, and I"m getting one of those rubber butt pads for it. They help a lot. I shot a m38 carbine with 203 grain and the kick was much more manageable, but it was still there, so it was good  |

Im 5' 10' 250lbs and 20 rounds is about my limit for a day! Im gonna have to get a recoil pad for mine.

right on mason, i have a mav 88, kicks way harder than this surplus ammo. i did a rapid fire(6 shots) on my mav after shooting two boxes and that hurt me! hey question, should the surp ammo go through 1/4" steel at say 100'? mine did, and in hitting concrete in a graze, it sent up some burning embers kinda like a flare. i thought this a bit strange for copper and lead.
