I'm sure you guys already know all the little things that should be in a bug out bag but one thing I learned on my last medical missions trip to central America was to bring a $2 wal mart inflatable pool raft as a air matress. They fold down compact, are cheap, and are 1000 times better than any sleeping mat from cabelas. Don't argue with me about it. I lived on one for 33 days on dirt floors lol. There is always one in my trunk and one in my bag : )

I'll argue. My 19 year old Thermarest is far better than any cheap air mattress or pool toy. Takes up a little more room, but I'm OK with that. That said, ain't nothing wrong with an air mattress, as long as it keeps holding air. My experience with Walmart pool toys is that half of them won't hold air when new, and the other half won't last an afternoon before losing containment. There ARE some high and medium priced sleeping pads out there that are total crap...I've had some of them; so I understand your dislike of teh genre. But a good Thermarest and some of the others are far better, and worth every penny. And I am a CHEEEEEEP SOB, believe me. BTW, my dad had a heavy duty air mattress, I don't know who made it. Canvas covered rubber, about 5 pounds, and 5 inches think when inflated...he had to patch it a few times, but it was a great car camping item. Very cushy... |

I got one of the cheap Hammocks that dont take up much room. I would rather be off the ground anyway. I will have to put it in my bag.

YAY for the cheap fixes!!! And Duct tape for an inflatable raft is probably the best patch material, since the adhesive is based in natural rubber! Good find man.

I have a double sized Ozark Trail air mattress that's lasted the last 4 years of hunting seasons with absolutely zero issues. I think I'll stick with that for now. I do really like the idea of an inflatable pool raft, most of those seem to be very durable.

And on the topic of survival, how about you just tough it out and lay your sleeping bag on the ground, and pack something actually useful? No, that isn't enough. Normally most people sleep on something insulating, that is really all the thin GI pads are for. The heat your body produces goes upward, convection you know, and so we use blankets/bags to keep it near our bodies, while insulating from the ground with a pad. Thicker pads are used for comfort. An air mattress makes a really good insulator, and is cushy too. But in a hammock, you allow air to circulate under you, and you need more blankets there than on top to keep you warm, much more than if you were on an insulator. Sleeping on the cold ground will do the same thing, until you heat the ground enough to stop losing heat into it...but as my survival guy says, "if you think you can heat the entire planet with your arse, you better think again"...  The fact is, a thin GI pad is worth a LOT more than you might think. The thin 3/4 length Therm-rest pads are as light, and take up even less room than nearly any other pad. And the groundbug thing may be valid...but if it is really cold, most of them are already gone anyway. And when I said cold, I didn't mean 65 degrees...  I like the hammock, don't get me wrong; but it is only good three months of the year in my AO. |
