I didn't know if I should post here or the Curio Relic section.  But I believe that only the Russian SKS's are Curio so I chose to start here.

Back around 15 years ago I bought my first gun.  It was a Russian SKS.  Paid $129.00 for it.  I stripped the stock and refinished it.  The darn thing looked really good when done.  I wish I had never sold it.

I am starting to look for another one.  I am not fond of the SKS's that take AK mags, so for now leave them out of the equation.  I eventually want a Chinese Carbine SKS too, but for now I am looking for a full length SKS with a Blade Bayonet and the original wood stock.  What is out there in this config?

I want another Russian example but they are hard to find around here.  I see a few on GB, but then I might have issue with finding an FFL to do the transfer because "If its something they can get and sell at their shop, they will not do an FFL transfer".  They are a great LGS so I am not complaining, and I totally understand their position.

My question is;

If I can't find a Russian SKS at the LGS, what would be the 3 next best choices?  What other countries received or manufactured them?  What versions were the best?

I don't know about SKS's but on the FFL thing, try to find a pawn shop that deals in guns they are usually way more willing to do a transfer it's just extra bucks for them, my local guy is great he'll do em for 10-15 bucks.

That would be great but we don't have pawn shops here.  I don't know if they are not legal in Illinoid or what but the nearest pawn to us is in Clinton IA, and they are not FFL.

Well they are douches if they refuse to do an FFL for you. I would refuse to do my business there. Do you have a C and R license?

No C&R Lic.  But I was contemplating getting a gunsmith certification and getting my own FFL.

What is involved in getting the C&R FFL?

As for my LGS, they are a great shop with great service and they are not HP bashers.  In fact I bought an OD Green .40SW Hi Point off Gun Broker once this past summer.  The guy behind the counter (just an employee) gave me a little crap over not buying it from them.  But the owner later on was understanding because he knew that he couldn't get one for me and he even gave me a break on the Transfer fee.  I would have rather bought it from him because I would have saved money, but he couldn't get one.  The guy behind the counter I believe may be a closet Hi Point Hater, but the owner is all about happy customers.  And once I came back and bought 4 or 5 more guns this summer the guy behind the counter changed his tune.  Commission is commission, whether its on a $175 Hi Point or another brand.  I usually know what I want, point it out, and pay for it or put it on lay-away.  Quick easy money for them.

For obtaining a C&R License.

Yugoslavian M59/66A1 and M59/66 SKS's are about the easiest and best to find.  Great machining and a high quality rifle.  Norinco(North China Industries) SKS's are up there also.  You won't go wrong with either one of those.  Russians are getting hard to find locally and are priced that way also.  If I were in your situation I would find an SKS that I liked online and ask your local shop to order it for you, from a place like Southern Ohio Guns or Century International.  You won't be able to find the prices on these from their websites due to not having a ffl of your own, but if you would like I could find you a few examples and give you the options.

+1 to what Krippp said, when I can find a decent priced Yugo SKS and have the money for it I would get it.

Well, I know I said I didn't want an SKS with an AK mag but...   embarrassed2

I went to my LGS and they had two SKS's in stock.  Both were used in what I would consider to be very good condition.

One was a Norinko 20.5" with spike and fixed 10 round.

The other was a Norinko 16.5" with the AK mag, no bayonet, and a nice wood stock with a rubber butt plate.

I looked over the SK with the spike and full length barrel first.  Then I grabbed the SK with the 16.5 inch barrel.  It came with a 30rnd mag that I just despised.  IMHO the 30 rounders look great on an AK47 but not the SKS.  I asked if they had a 5 round mag.  Once I put the 5 rounder in there it changed the whole look of the rifle and I really like it (a lot).  So I asked them if I could swap the 30rnd for a 5rnd and they said no problem.  I got the rifle for $399.00, and I put it on lay away.  Seems like I got a fair deal since similar rifles are going for similar prices on GB.

I forgot to snap a pic with my phone cause I was raised in the stone ages and forget that I always have a camera with me.  I will get a pic this weekend.

This pic is NOT the SKS I bought but is identical in profile and condition.  This one is for sale on GB.
