How is Muzzle Energy measured. I would like to make a project out of take my own measures. How can this be done?

I found this website that shows a calculated formula based on velocity and bullet mass.

http://www.pyramydair.com/site/articles/formulas/

Is this the only way to measure muzzle energy? or is there some kind of scale that you can also shoot at that gives a read out.

Thanks.

Costs less than $100 and will measure the speed of the bullet.  Then plug the weight of the bullet in grains and the velocity of the bullet in feet per second into this calculator:
