I just want to thank everybody for their help. The wife told me I can buy 2, but I think I'm just going to get the 91/30 for now and a crate of ammo.
Still wondering though, is there any diff in the round and hex reciever other than shape?
Also, the sniper model, anything special besides the bolt turned down and the scope?
Hope these aren't to awful of questions, I am still learning.
TT

hex receivers were made until 1935 at Izhevsk and 1936 at Tula. The Hex version is regarded as superior in workmanship generally. All versions produced before the start, and after the end, of World War 2 are usually of a higher quality as more time could be taken in their construction.
The sniper version was hand fitted by armourers at the Izhevsk and Tula Armory's. They will have better accuracy than a run of the mill M91/30. Ex-snipers were removed from sniper duty due to being physically worn out and suffering from decreased accuracy. They retained the bent bolt but had the scope mount holes in the receivers welded closed. Most were arsenal refurbished in the 1950's by the Russians and should show no ill affects as far as accuracy and function are concerned. Nearly all sniper versions for sale currently are not true versions, most are ex-snipers that have been fitted with a reproduction{albeit faithfull} scope and mount by the import companies here in the US.

If you haven't already, you might try the light ball 147 grain ammo...kicks less too, both in my M44 and 91/30s. But the weight of the Mosins is SO much more than my Savage 110, that I find shooting the Mosins far easier on my shoulder, even with the heavy ball ammo. And for a real treat, go from shooting the Mosin, to shooting the SKS...I almost fell on my face when I shot 20 rounds of Mosin, and then leaned into the first shot of 7.62X39 the other day... LMAO I did the same thing a couple weeks ago!!!!!!! about fell on my face with the SKS!

From what I understand the hex model is stronger as there is more steel around the chamber.

Never has been proven to be any difference in the strength. Hex shape has nothing to do with strength, it was a purely asthetic decision to make it that way. They converted to round only to simplify the manufacturing process for enhanced numbers. But don't for a minute believe that a hex receivered Mosin is stronger than any other Mosin, except for the Chinese T-53 (different steel and heat treating process).

Wait, I missed that part... did you just say you were turning down the chance to buy a second wife approved gun, for something as practical as ammo? You may need to turn in your man card, buddy! Just messing with you..but man...you are way too sensible, and have a LOT more self control than me!

I'm considering getting my sixth Mosin Nagant. Big5 has them on sale. I think I'll get me a run of the mill 43 Izzy and make a showroom piece out of it. Hi gloss polished bolt, strip, sand, and re-shellac to a mirror shine, new black paint, white the stamps, etc. Really make a BBQ gun out of it. Hmmmm.....
