sounds to me like he wants the insurance money for his million dollar car and probably thinks he will buy it back (for parts of course, yeah right) after the insurance company totals it just to have the company he works at fix it up and resell it. He probably thinks he will get the cars value twice. sounds like fraud to me. Of course this is all just a guess.

What sounds like happened is he was out tooling around in someone else's car, was dogging it out driving as fast as possible and lacked the experience to control it, crashed into a pond and made up an attractive lie to cover his arse.

If I was driving a car worth that much money I wouldn't let ANYTHING distract me, much less a crappy bird. I definately smell fish here.
