I have a friend who has butchered 3 hogs in the last year. He has used a .22 mag to dispatch them with not so great of results. I'm wondering if you think a 9mm witha fmj would do the job on a 175 to 200# hog? He has placed the .22 mag just above between the eyes. Say draw a X from ears to the eyes. I would like your thoughts on this.  John

I wouldn't use a 9mm. My friend butchered a hog last spring and put a full mag of fmj into a 250-275lb hog's head and all it did was piss the hog off. I would use a small rifle about a .243win or so.

thats wierd.  I killed two hogs this year with a 22lr between the eyes no problem.

Use hollow points instead of an FMJ, it will make for a quick kill, and will prevent any ricochets through the barn.

You don't want to kill a pig with the shot. You do want to stun it, and immediately cut it's throat to to let the heart pump out the blood. It's called slaughtering as opposed to butchering, which is cutting the meat. It's not a pleasant kill but it is the proper way to prcess a hog. the meat come out pinker instead of redder and better flavored.
