The Mav 88 [with both long and short barrels is good] buck and bird shot with it I would get a good rifle or carbine [HP 4095 upto a 357 or 44 mag leveraction] and you might want to consider getting your self a revolver .22 lr/magnum deal you can use silent rounds in them as well as rat/snake shot

For me it would be
A pistol.. Take your pick... A .22LR Again take your pick A Long range rifle (for me 308 win as it is a common round and used by military)

1) a handgun -- your Taurus will do just fine. 2) .22 rifle -- I would suggest a Ruger 10/22 because of the option of acquiring hi-cap mags, but just about any .22 will do. 3) this is the one I struggle with, since you limited it to only 3. I would have to go with a rifle. If money is no object, I'd suggest a Ruger Mini-14 or Mini-30, or better yet, an AK variant. If money is as issue, I vote for a Mosin.
I would personally add a shotgun as a 4th option. Any 12 gauge will do. I would suggest getting a Sears pawn shop special and cutting the barrel.

Well between the wife and I.... there are 2 .45's, her Ruger 1022 and my Marlin Model 60, the Mosin, and the .17hmr.
Your Tarus would be fine, the Maverick would be fine, for a long arm I would consider something semi-auto and in the .30 cal range. Make sure you also have a knife and maybe a retractible baton handy. Every layer of defense or offense will help as long as your not over loading yourself.

The best SHTF weapon is your neighbors...you can have any gun you want, and as much ammo as you want, and someone can still take you out with 1 shot... But I'd agree with the rest, a decent pistol like yours, a .22, and a .30 cal of some sort, and while I like semi, it isn't really that important. If you are fighting off zombies, or hordes of starving folks, you have already lost the war; and you should have already been running somewhere other than where you are...

Handgun for SD needs. Rifle or Shotgun for hunting or SD needs Rimfire rifle for small game hunting.
That is about all one person can carry on a good day, add all the other SHTF stuff and you will be tempted to start dumping gear the farther your journey is when on foot.

We talked about this on the phone last night man, but I still say.
Handgun of course for close range SD, back up, etc.
Some sort of long range rifle. I'm buying a 91/30. Reliable, accurate, ammo for it is everywhere, and did I say reliable?
And I still like my 995. Good for anywhere from 10 yards to 100, and ammo is once again plentiful.
But last night I started thinking after we got off the phone, and I am even more sure today, a .22 like everyone else is saying for small game. Squirrel and what not, I'm gonna stick with my Marlin Model 60

If you think about the scenario, most likely you will have more than one person involved. Ill use my scenario of a family of 4. Id say a sidearm of some sort, a shotgun, and a long range rifle. Id give my wife the .22 since it is the lightest and easiest for her to shoot. So really you have 4 weapons total. Mine would be my Beretta 92fs, Maverick 88, Mosin 91/30 and Ruger 10/22. She could also carry my sig Mosquito making it 5 total. Im sure I could find some room for the 995ts for those intermediate shots. Totaling 6, 3 each. The nice thing is the Beretta and 995 use the same ammo as well as the 10/22 and Mosquito. Really your only carrying 4 types of ammo for 6 guns. All of the sudden it went from 3 to 6.

Define "SHTF". Are we talking a small group or individual on foot with a specific place to go to? Staying at home or at your "retreat" to "wait it out" or start over? Wandering through the wilderness with no goal other than survival and maybe find a better place over the next hill? In a vehicle where carrying a few hundred pounds of ammo is no problem? Are roving bands of spiky haired mutants wanting to ravish my dog and BBQ my wife, or is the main purpose of a firearm to get something to eat because all the stores are empty?
Each scenario will color my choices for a particular firearm and ammo loadout.
