question is 5.56 nato round the same as .223 if it is wally got a truckload of 223 in today,(the kid) behind the counter said it was the same would he be correct?

 No. The two have a slightly different neck on the case and the 5.56 is supposed to be loaded at a higher pressure. This has been debated for awhile now since the two are rated under different methods. 223 will work in a 5.56 with no problem; 5.56 in a 223 according to most manufacturers is a no-no.

Yeah the general rule with that ammo is that if you buy a rifle chambered for 5.56mm you can safely shoot either 5.56mm NATO or .223 Remington, but if you have a rifle chambered for .223 Remington, it's not a good idea to shoot 5.56mm.
