I'm nominally familiar with the physics of snap caps - they're just a fake round designed to cushion the firing pin so dry-firing doesn't cause any damage.  Just wondering, could I save a few bucks and make my own snap caps by loading fired brass with a new bullet, no powder, and a fired primer?

Yes. I have several sets of these myself.

Also, the only firearm that it is bad to dry fire is a revolver. Most modern semi-auto's have firing pin springs attached to them and it does no harm when dry firing.

With a free-floating firing pin like the AR-15, snap caps would still be recommended though, right?

The ones I make have a eraser glued in the primer hole and has two holes drilled into the case.  I also paint them orange or red, but that comes off when they are used,

Exactly how much dry firing practice are you going to do with an AR-15 though? Seriously, it's not that big of a deal, but if your OCD requires, make up some snap caps, or buy some. Regardless, it's not going to hurt your AR-15 to dry fire it, but that is a personal choice.

I dry fire my AR only when I get done cleaning it and am doing a function check, so to me it's not worth the cost or time to make snap caps.

Definitely.  I was thinking of finding some obnoxiously bright nail polish.  I figure that would stay on pretty well.
