Do yourself a favor and go get a copy of Linux Mint or Ubuntu and you can install it inside of windows and then when you boot up your pc you  can choose either one of the o/s.  Linux is almost virus free.  All the viruses written for windows based systems do nothing in linux.  I have never had a virus in linux.  Not to say that they don't exist but they are almost non existant compare to windows which is littered with them.

There aren't viruses like there are in Windows, and the malware is very limited because linux has so many variables in it.  There are exploits that can be taken advantage of (usually browser exploits) that can give people access to your PC, but you don't have to run antivirus software or anything in linux, which frees up a lot of overhead and allows better use of your RAM.

I do like Windows 7, but prior to that I had no desire whatsoever to boot a Windows machine.  I haven't been able to crash 7yet, which is freaking amazing.  With XP and Vista it seemed like I was having BSoD every 5 minutes.

Yup they are, I've bought 3 of them so far lol.  If you aren't a student, see if you can find someone who is and offer them $10 to let you have their copy of 7.  I've found that it's pretty easy to get my fellow college students to let go of theirs when you dangle 2 potential cheeseburgers in front of them.

Yeah, I get mine for $20 through my school, and I get Photoshop CS4 for free.  Along with a lot of other crap, I love being a student.

I like to run spybot or other virus scans in safe mode if i'm dealing with a nasty virus.  Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't

combo fix didn't work.  time for plan E.  I'm using knoppix 5.3 to retrieve data but i'm a little confused.  A bunch of drives are showing up on the desktop and i can't figure out which is which.  I have identified my old hard drive, but i can't identify the other hard drive that I want to load my data onto.  is there an easy way to tell which is which?
