right now id stay with vista until you see industry support of 64 bit OS. about 90% of peripherals dont support 64 bit OS setups.

Windows 7 should come with both 32 and 64 disk if I recall correct. I would go for it. It's vista with everything fixed and runs so much better. It's a lot less of a memory hog too. Your new laptop should handle the 64 bit fine I would think.

7 does not come with both 32 and 64, but I haven't had any problems out of 64. I run x64 on my desktop and my new laptop and my printers, network cards, etc. all work just fine. I vastly prefer 64 over 32, and now that hardware support is much better it's the way to go IMO. Plus, with x64 you can use over 4GB RAM, which is nice.

back to the brands topic. I would have to go back to find data to back this up, but they've gone downhill hard in the last couple of years. They've go ta lot of issues with AC adapter failures. Buy a new one at a ridiculous price, it will die too.
Dell is generally okay, but their entry level consumer models(ie: 1525, 1725 inspirons) suck from a quality/engineering standpoint. I see some random failures out of IBM's, but they're generally bulletproof. Seriously nuts what they can take. Next best thing to a toughbook! HP's feel fragile to me, never seen one dropped though, so its just feel and having looked on the inside. They have had a MASSIVE recall recently, but that is not their fault. They invested heavily in putting an nvidia graphics chip into a bunch of models...that chip promptly failed miserably. Lots of heat issues and graphics problems that cause total system failures.
Everybody is having tons of hard drive failures these days(SSD's excluded). We have contributed this primarily to drop in QC due to the massive surge in laptop sales in the last couple of years. Invest in an external drive and keep your stuff backed up!
/end rant
This is all based on what I see every day working in a university run tech repair shop. I see all the spills, drops, and failures to back up that important paper you can imagine. We are also a certified Dell, Lenovo, and Apple service center. We are actually in the top 80 apple service centers in the world.
Side note on apple: The macbook is decent value if you need a mid grade machine with nice features. Just don't let them swindle you out of your hard earned money for an overpriced memory or hard drive upgrade. Just do it yourself or take it to a local shop and save a ton! I'm still not an apple fan, just sayin.

Not trying to hijack the thread here but going to anyway since you brought it up. I also note that you said you not a fan of Macs. I'm just putting my .02 in. Macs are nice no doubt about it. However I buy a laptop every two or three years and I have not had any that did not last me that time frame and then some. I usually pass them on to other family members at that time. I have dropped them spilled coffee on them and used them well. I can't see what more a macbook offers at $1000 to $1500 and up that my $500 laptop does not do. And I can buy 2 or 3 for the price of a mac. I'm a computer programmer so I use it for programming, some image and video work and then the normal bills and internet stuff. I'm not a gamer so that's not a factor for me. I now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.
