Wife and I were at the first night of our NRA/CHL class last night. We had a session where we got to fondle a bunch of different guns, as the NRA class is aimed at people who may not have shot or purchased a gun yet.

So I'm at the semi-auto table, and I grab a Kel-Tec with one of those clips attached to the slide for those who don't want to use a holster in the pocket. See, many of these were the instructor's personal guns and this one was somebody's BUG. I dropped the mag and racked the slide, and lo and behold, that doesn't look like a snap cap... the extractor had failed on this gun, and when he cleared it for classroom use it did not extract the .380 Hornady Critical Defense round that was in the chamber. I removed the round and gave it to one of the instructors.

Thank God none of the other people in the class (mostly firearm newbies) had been interested in trying out that little Kel-Tec before I looked at it, or there could have been a very serious accident.

Just a friendly reminder... somebody's life may have been saved last night because I followed the gun safety rules. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO GUN SAFETY RULES!

Excellent point.  Even instructors aren't infallible.

Lucky you caught that.

good work! never trust anyone's word that a gun isn't loaded.

check, double check, triple check. then check again if you intend to dry fire.

Yeah, the scary thing is that they did want people to "play with" and dry fire the guns, and they were being relatively lax on the safety rules because they had just spent a good fifteen minutes clearing the guns and putting snap caps in them etc. So somebody very well could have picked that thing up and fired it.

I wouldn't quite say that but he took it seriously and thanked me. I was kinda freaked out myself, thinking that I was a brain fart away from a negligent discharge. I was keeping the guns pointed at the floor or the walls away from people, some of the other guys may not have been.

At every class I've ever attended as a student, or one I've assisted in as an instructor, we've always posted someone at the door to check, double check and triple check the firearms before they were put on the table to be viewed. Not only that, we inserted barrel flags into each firearm just to show that they were clear.

Dude, major kudos to you for what you did. That probably did save someone's life. Good stuff man.

I noticed that they were using chamber flags and doing multiple checks last night... they also didn't have nearly as many guns out.

Never even trust your own word that the gun is loaded double check and then check again.  And if you hand it to someone else make sure they do the same.
