Sorry, the "closed bolt" just brought back memories of paintball arguments. I've never heard of "open bolt" on a firearm. What's the difference?

open bolt firearms were a design that originated in full auto belt fed machine guns. it allowed simple, easy ot manufacture, reliable firarms with avery high rate of fire. it evolved into SMGs in the 30s and 40s. the bolt has no spereate firing pin or hammer, just a protrusion in teh center to strike the primer. the bolt stripped the round out of the magazine or belt, fed it into teh chamber and when the round was stopped by the shoulder or case mouth the forward momentum of the bolt drove the firing pin dimple into the primer and fired the round. the guns had very few moving parts, and could be very robust. open bolt semi auto guns were banned with the 86 FOPA as too easy to convert to full auto so only exisitng models were grnadfathered in. thats why the closed bolt status is important. further details : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_boltSW

The AA-12 is a full-auto shotgun that demonstrates the open-bolt design at about 47 sec... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4ebtj1jR7c&feature=related
