Had the same minor issue. I store my ammo in my safe also so I stood mine on top of my military ammo can. Works fine.

I put a dowel down the muzzle for a time but now they just rest against the side and back of the safe.

i just lean mine sideways against the back of the safe since it has a scope on it,,,its a pain in the a$$ digging it out whenever i wanna shoot it,but after 1 or 200 rounds,i figure its worth it and put it back in the same spot

I cut the threads off a 5/16 bolt about 3-4 inches long. Smoothed the end and installed a rubber gas line over the bolt leaving about 1.5 inches exposed to insert in the barrel. The carbine rest easily in the gun safe / cabinet.
