Default Boy Scout Merit Badge - Handgun Shooting?

Found out Friday night that the BSA is working on a new merit badge to go along with their existing Rifle Shooting merit badge: Handgun Shooting.

The rumor I heard is that it will only be open to boys over 14 and will closely mirror the NRA Basic Handgun course (used by Ohio and others for CCW training) but be restricted to .22LR handguns.

Apparently, they're also reworking the Rifle Shooting merit badge to more closely mirror the NRA Basic Rifle as well. This will allow for the option of magazine fed rifles instead of requiring only single-shot bolt action rifles. Again, still .22LR only.

Personally, I think this is a good thing but it will require me to become NRA Basic Handgun Instructor certified eventually too. And I'm still working on Basic Rifle Instructor certification!

And here I thought my own personal obsession with my hobbies was already a money pit.

Peace favor your sword,
Kirk

Good news there. One of the things I loved to do at summer camp was the rifle range.

Back in the middle of the last century, when I was in the Boy Scouts, It was called the Rifle and Shotgun Merit Badge.

Do the Boy Scouts still offer anything for Shotgunning?

Inquiring minds...

They did about 14 years ago when I got mine. They were separate badges.

Yes. However, it is a separate merit badge now. They also offer Black Powder (rifle) merit badge. And Archery.

The fact that Venture Scouts have access to Handgunning, I think, is one of the reasons they're considering this.

This a very good news.. I certainly hope it becomes reality... I recall YEARS and YEARS ago The YMCA offered rifle shooting at their mountain camps... Now its pretty much Archery only.. if that at some camps

Black Powder isn't a separate badge, but it is part of the other shooting badges. The Rifle shooting merit badge lets you choose to shoot either rimfire, air rifle, or BP, and the Shotgun merit badge lets you choose to do BP or regular shot shells.

You do the same things in the "why and how" parts of all of them, then you get type specific in the safety, parts of a gun ID, and target shooting part.

I also am happy they are thinking of letting us do pistols. Chances are, it will be rimfire and/or air guns, but it is a beginning.

lklawson, I have a couple of single shots, but with larger groups, if I need more guns in action, what I do to follow the spirit of the rules is, I only let kids load one shell per mag on my mag fed guns, but they shoot 5 shot groups, so I have their buddy load the mag/s they aren't shooting to make it as easy as possible, and reduce the amount of wiggling around, turning over, getting up and down; and I ALWAYS try to use a buddy system, the buddy serves as a spotter, as a loader, as an extra set of eyes.

And sadly, I avoid using my tube fed guns.

I think it is a great idea. Maybe there will be more educated kids that don't accidentally shoot their buddy because of this.

People who teach their kids about safety and responsibility are less likely to have their kid injure themselves or somebody else with a firearm.

The Sea Scout Ship I've associated with over the years has held at least one handgun shoot every year since They have been a Unit.

Last time, there were a 1/2 dozen Sea Scouts, 5 adults and more than 600 rounds fired ~ .22LR, 9mm, .38 Special, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.

Everyone enjoyed themselves.
