I copied and pasted some of the stuff.
Quote:
A curriculum system used across the state of Texas reportedly includes a lesson plan for 6th graders instructing students to create a flag for a “new socialist nation” using “symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism.”
The following was taken from the CSCOPE curriculum lesson plan: “Notice socialist/communist nations use symbolism on their flags representing various aspects of their economic system. Imagine a new socialist nation is creating a flag and you have been put in charge of creating a flag. Use symbolism to represent aspects of socialism/communism on your flag. What kind of symbolism/colors would you use?”

Quote:
The following was included in the lesson plan for the Boston Tea Party:
News report: New Act of Terrorism
A local militia, believed to be a terrorist organization, attacked the property of private citizens today at our nation’s busiest port. Although no one was injured in the attack, a large quantity of merchandise, considered to be valuable to its owners and loathsome to the perpetrators, was destroyed. The terrorists, dressed in disguise and apparently intoxicated, were able to escape into the night with the help of local citizens who harbor these fugitives and conceal their identities from the authorities. It is believed that the terrorist attack was a response to the policies enacted by the occupying country’s government. Even stronger policies are anticipated by the local citizens.

Funny thing is, I LOVE that type of lesson plan.
It is good to learn the ways of the enemy, makes it easier to identify and defeat them.
The problem is, will the teacher, after doing those things, spend the time to teach the kids that even though the media saw them as terrorists, there is a bias in most media, possibly worse today, so we need to learn to identify that, and see through it. Even though the shipping company and merchants saw them as criminals, and the government was in favor of putting them in jail, the Boston Tea party folks were freedom fighters, they stood up and broke laws WITHOUT HURTING ANYONE to illustrate their position, and helped lead the way to creating this nation. At any time, if YOUR government starts acting like THEIR government, you may be right to do the same.
For the flag, learning symbolism is a BIG deal. That way when some un-named presidential candidate releases posters that have the symbology of a communist or socialist system, they can recognize and understand it as the failed BS that it really is.
If you can get the kids to remember THAT part, and recognize the other crap as garbage, you win!

I think it's smart. They aren't making them pledge allegiance to it, only using an abstract ideology to make a point about how societies function.
Lets also remember this is in Texas, I was raised and educated here. We have a diverse school system, but the realities of it are simple. Texas works because Texas is awesome, don't change it, change yourself.

Ajole, we need more teachers like you. I only wish my kids were so lucky. My son is pretty opinionated, has tried to write several papers about strong political topics with a constitutionalist standpoint, his teachers won't allow it......,

That's just sad. I mean, that is so against everything education should be about!
We had a kid that was pretty pro-Obama in 2009, he wrote some papers that he wasn't sure the teachers would appreciate, he knew I was totally anti-Obama, as are most of the kids, and they aren't shy about it; but he still came to me to see what I thought about it before he gave it the English teacher, because he knew I would read it and criticize his writing, and not his opinion. Although I did offer some opposing points that he should consider trying to address.

I run into kids like that at family gatherings. I try to talk to them but most of them are spouting recycled opinions and haven't put to much thought into it.
