Since "best" is so subjective, and everyone needs to find the rounds that work best in their gun, perhaps a better question should be, which rounds do not work well, or shouldn't be used. While I have shot a box of Winchester White Box 115gr FMJ, many people report problems feeding this ammo. There is variant of the Wolf ammo that most people don't like, and anything with steel cases should be avoided due to perceived wear and tear of the firing mechanism. I did have trouble with RJS 115gr FMJ keyholing, and I've shot a lot of Walmart Federal Champion fairly reliably, and a bunch of S&B 115 FMJ very reliably, and cheaply. As far as accuracy, the gun is far more accurate than I am from a normal standing stance, but I have heard hollow points are more accurate due to most of the weight being towards the back of the bullet, adding stability. As far as good HD or SD rounds, Hornady's Critical Defense, Speer Gold Dot, Winchester DPX1, are all good choices. So have fun, try a bunch of different ammo to find what your gun thinks is best.

I just got a 9mm Hi-point, and as its my first pistol, I wondered about the different loads I see:
115 grn vs 124 grn vs 147 grn as examples in 9mm size.

besides more power and cost for the 145 grn loads is there any possibility of too large a load ?

I've bought 200 rounds of the 115 grn stuff for when I get to try it out at a range.

This question qualifies as a oxymoron. No insult intended.

I bought my HP specifically to shoot junk ammo I already had on hand. The only qualifications needed are that it goes boom, pushes the slide all the way back and jumps out of the way as the slide picks up the next round and closes so it can do the same thing again.

I find that it does this very well with my trunched cone cast reloads, cast SWC reloads and about every kind of short and long FMJ, jacketed hollow point and soft nose antique ammo I had left over in the cigar box from the 1970s when I last owned a 9mm.

I find that the 115gr bullets work best for me.

I also am a newbie. Just waiting for my c9. How many grains do I want and why? Lets say I won't shoot over 40 yards, will there be a big difference at the range? Once you find the ammo you like, do you usually stick with that or do you switch it up for any reason?

115 or 124gr ammo should work just dandy. If my carbine is any guide, brand is not a concern. Use whatever you can find on sale.

I reload but when I was buying it seems that most anything I found all went bang and launched a bullet with acceptable accuracy for me. I practice at reasonable self defense distances (25 FEET or less) and have always achieved my personal requirement for MOD (Minute of Dead) accuracy.

I haven't found any brass cased 115 or 124gr ammo that my C9 doesn't like - even the infamous WWB.

The only factory ammo that I have put through my C9 is the 115 gn Federal Champion from Wally's. I've put 1500 rounds of that down the pipe and with the results I got I never had a reason to try anything else especially since it is so easy to get around here.

Then I took up reloading and I have found my ammo to be more accurate and way cheaper. I've played with 115 gn and 125 gn round nose and I think I may like the 125 gn a little better simply because I have had an easier time working up loads with the 125 than the 115, but now that I have a solid recipe for 115 gn it's a toss up.
