Re: Bear Grylls Gerber knife. What a shame.
Quote:
I used to LOVE Gerber; currently have one of the old Gators sitting next to me. But a while back I was knife shopping at Wally World and saw every Gerber there had Made in China on it.
I went with a Kershaw Blackout; says Made in USA right on the box, and $40 out the door. Compared the Kershaw to the higher end Gerbers they had, and the Gerber knives weren't as good with the fit and finish overall (a few even "caught" as I opened them, made me cringe).
I buy USA made on my knives and multi-tools so long as there's any choice; one bad lock on a Chinese made knife and you can wind up with stitches, or worse.
For the record, even many of the expensive knife brands have gone to China or Taiwan; I've got a CRKT M16 here that is Taiwan made, cost me $100, and the thing won't stay closed! Not safe to carry around, so it's been sitting for a long while. > I've learned to watch those labels now with any brand; it's my money, and could be my fingers on the line. Buy quality so you're not wasting either.

Been carrying a CRKT M16-14D since my first tour, and hasn't let me down yet. I use the LAWKS on the back, and haven't had any problems.

Some Bokers are made in China...but they are labeled so you can tell which are Chinese made knives. I got a Magnum switchblade that is pretty good, when they first came out. Haven't touched the newer stuff. KaBar has USA on their US made knives, but not the others, so you can tell on them as well.
- Boker knives: Solingen, Germany
- Boker Arbolito knives: Argentina
- Boker Plus knives: Taiwan and China (except model 02BO012, made in the USA)
- Cinch knives by Boker: Solingen, Germany (except model 11CI403Y, made in Argentina)
- Magnum knives: Taiwan and China

But where was the steel for the files made?
My mom has a carving knife made by a guy in Montana from a file...it isn't pretty, he didn't do that...but it is a really good knife.
Post some pics when you get them done!

I avoid anything with Bear Grylls name on it. Philosophical mostly. Though he may be entertaining, I quit watching him a long time ago. I watched his show with the hope of picking up some info here and there, only to realize that he takes extreme, unadvised and unnecessary risks in a survival situation. Which I guess is okay when you have camera crews, medics and communications standing 30 feet away. I'll stick with Dual Survival and Survivorman. And a real Kabar...

Knives from files. Boy, does that bring back memories. Out in the garage someplace I have a box with seven or eight file knives, and one of those is a monster pig sticker. They were all made in the late 1950s by my grandfather, and all have antler grips and inlaid stones. No two were ever the same, except they were all razor sharp.
