Default Whats a good, CHEAP, long gun for end of the world survival?

What is your idea about a good end of the world rifle? I'm looking around for one to get somewhere in the $350 to free range. Any ideas about what to look for?

Waiting for my TS stock to come in now for my $139.00 bargain 995. Thought it would be a good trunk gun and "walk home" gun. Only got 17 miles from work to home but mostly uphill. Only thing I wish is for it to be a 4595 so it would match my edc in caliber. Oh well, carry couple of mags of 9 also.

Are you thinking long range rifle, or more of a carbine? $350 limits your options a bit...my .02 cents is whatever rifle (if, it is a full rifle you're looking for) get it chambered in .223/5.56. Mosin's might be great at taking punishment and all, but once your stockpile of ammo runs out it's going to be near impossible to find it. A Savage in .223 might fight in your budget if you watch Armslist.

I am currently looking at the Mosin Nagant .. I know lots of guys here have em so maybe they can give more details .. but from what I know .. they are Milsurp so the price is right .. under 200 usually. Sturdy, Accurate, reliable, shoots a good high caliber round, ammo is pretty readily available and again at milsurp prices. You can attach a bayonet for up close and personal action. Good sight radius for distance accuracy and will accept optics. Lots of different variations to meet your personal preferences. I am personally thinking of a carbine for its smaller size.

Cheap long range with ammo affordable enough to stock up = Mosin Nagant for $89.95

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?groupid=256&name=Russian+1891%2f30+7. 62x54R+Mosin+Nagant+Rifles

As far as a firearm that you could scavenge NATO ammo for, either a .223/5.56 or an AK47 7.62x39

For the cost of an AR or AK without ammo you can buy a Mosin and 3-4,000 rounds of ammo.

I was thinking about a good medium to long range rifle. I'll use my HP 995 for up close.

Ringo, get a Mosin Nagant. I prefer the carbine model myself. Stash a few spam cans and you are set.

The plus side is that Mosins are sexy. Parts are easy to come:
