A moderator more or less keeps the site up and running and does the administration work , and is kind of like the babysitter of the house making sure the kids are getting along well and playing nice with each other lol They can boot you off if you misbehave 
I used to be the Sysop of The Mother Lode BBS back in the day , It was the intenet BEFORE the WWW came along , I had all kinds of newsgroups and games up and running it was really to cool meet people from all around the world !
