Mauser 98 in .30-06 cal
Hey everyone, I have the chance to buy a Mauser 98 from one of my close friends. It was re-chambered to fire the Springfield .30-06 cartrige. I trust the guy I'm about to buy it from, but my main thing is what does everyone think of it? Good, bad, or indifferent?
I've always wanted a .30-06, and have recently been wanting a Mauser since learning about them. To me, it's the best of both worlds, but I just want a concensus of everyone else just to see what you guys say.
Thanks a lot, and if you think I'm stupid for buying this, go ahead and tell me, but please keep it somewhat respectful. I just wanna know opnions.

Re: Mauser 98 in .30-06 cal
Not all '98s in 30-06 were rechambers. Several countries issued them as standard and bought them that way from the factory. Colombia is one nation that did so and there will be a national crest on the receiver.
The 30-06 even in a rechamber is a good match with the '98. I have owned one rechamber and several issue -06 Mausers. All have been good rugged shooters.
Just look for bolt number matching the frame, good rifling. If it gives you a doubt have a smith check the headspace. That is about all that can go wrong with a '98 and that would be due to a bad rebarrel job.
A Mauser can actually gain value as you "Bubba" (customize) it as long as you do it skillfully. It is not like a "bubba" Mosin that has more value in the parts than the whole. No one looks at a custom Mauser and asks if you have the origional wood and bayonet.

But some specific Mausers can lose value even if the job is well done...and yes, MANY people that I know will ask if you have the original wood. In fact, I am still looking for the wood for a gun I got 3 years ago... >

How does that work? 30 cal in a 8mm barrel doesn't make sense in my head.

Re: Mauser 98 in .30-06 cal
DUH!
You screw out the old barrel and screw in a new one!
You can still buy the barrels already threaded for the 98 at almost any gunsmithing supply. Usually the chambers are a couple of thousandths short and need a finish reamer polish when installed.
The issue guns have -06 barrels from the factory.
If you just run the chamber reamer in the 8mm barrel you get what was known as an 8mm-06, which was a well received wildcat that is still popular today. (I know, you never heard of it. Trust me, it's out there.)
As far as bubba-ing guns, I worry about boogering them up about as much as the people that built them, handed them out to recruits and distroyed them by the thousands. Not a single one of them was ever intended to be a collectors' item.

Re: Mauser 98 in .30-06 cal
There were some Isrealie mausers that were re-chambered for 30-06 and .308. I've seen some at gun shows. I'd just borescope the barrel, headspace the action for go-no go. If it's someone you trust fine if he's a real good friend, but those are the things I'd look at. Stocks can be refurbed or changed they make them for big and small ring mausers. If I had the bucks Id look at Mitchells Mausers, they have a tanker version in 30-06, .308 and .243 (which struck me as odd) that looks sweet. But, for a low bucks shooter I'd go for it in a heart beat.

Re: Mauser 98 in .30-06 cal
Yeah, I'm not sure if it is a factory re-chamber or Bubba'd by a smith with a new barrel. I have yet to see the gun; I'm in Kansas and it is a very good friend in Colorado that has it right now. But for $200 for me (He was asking more, but doing me a buddy favor) and the chance to turn it down if I'm really worried about it. But I trust him and he said it's good. Man, I'm so glad more people out there know and thanks for telling me about the factory .30-06 Mausers. I never knew they existed. I'm really new to the Mausers, and would love to get one, and also would love to add an Enfield to my collection. It's gonna take a miracle to get me a Garand!
Aside from my C9 and hopefully a 45JHP in the near future, I've been getting my hands on some Mosin 98/30's and yes, those guys are very very picky about even putting a butt pad on, let alone any other mods!
Thanks again for the help and thoughts, guys! I'll let you know more as things go; if I get it or not.
