Default Best current production single-shot .22 Rifle?

The higher the gas prices get the worse my Post Peak-Oil Paranoia is itchin' me. Though I have a Ruger 10/22 (which I am very fond of), I am wanting to get a super-reliable single shot .22.

A lot of people talk about stock piling 9mm and 7.62, but I want to put back a several thousand of .22 and have a rifle that will is mechanically simple as possible. This is 'just in case' I end up a crazy old trapper dude in the hills living off squirrels and groundhogs after the oil bubble bursts.

I can't vouch for any particular single shot .22 because I don't own any. Here is a link for 5000 round cases of inexpensive .22LR though.

Henry makes a good single shot, also Rossi. Rossi is probably better, get a matched pair; 22lr / 12 ga.

I got my son an H&R Versa Pak. It is a single shot .22 on one barrel and a single shot .410 0n another. Very accurate, very reliable, very simple. Look at the H&R and New England Firearms (NEF) as they are the same. The Rossi brand is very similar and a bit cheaper but is imported from my understanding, if that is important to you.

ETA: Wally Mart still has Federal hollow points in the 550 count boxes for under $12.00. Far cheaper than the J&G price when shipping if factored in. Although the J&G price isn't out of line either anymore, sadly.

They don't make em any more but the Remington model 514 is a dang good little single shot. You can get em used for around $90 last time I checked. Maybe a little expensive I dunno. My dad got his for $12 when he was 10 or so. Who knows how many rounds have been through that little thing, but it still shoots like a champ.

screw that! get your self a good air rifle instead! pellets are dirt cheap and will take squirrels down with no effort.

Just my 2 .22lr's worth.

I'm sticking with my 10/22. It'd actually make a great combat weapon in a pinch, with 25-30 round mags, and virtually zero recoil, you could put 3-4 shots on target before they knew what hit 'em.

Plus, if the SHTF, a suppressor could easily be fashioned for it, so you could add a little stealth to the package...

I get the reasoning behind the single-shot, but even a single-shot gun can break... If you wanted, you could spend $50 or so, and get a backup trigger mechanism that you could change out if need-be...

I believe he is looking for something with few moving parts to jam. That said I give a +1 to the 514. The Henry is good also.

I really like the NEF/H&R break action single shots. Very solid design with few moving parts to break or wear out. Rossi's are also worth looking at if the price of the NEF is more than you want to spend.

Believe it or not but a crickett is a good rifle. I bought one for my daughter and it is damn accurate. They are a little pricier but they are worth it.
