Drill 9MM Hollow Point??
Hi All;
I'm casting some Lee TL124-2R (124 grain round nose).
In the Midway catalog, I saw a kit to drill 1/8" hollow points in loaded ammo.
I'm thinking I'd rather machine my own jig for this.
This looks much easier (and cheaper) than the Lyman Devastator single molds with the insert.
Questions:
1. How deep into the tip should it be drilled?
2. Anyone done this?
3. Good idea or waste of time?
Thanks

I'm not a re-loader. However, and this is purely from a logical standpoint, unless you plan on using them solely for plinking, I wouldn't worry with it. If you end up using them for SD/HD then a the oppositions lawyer during the ensuing court trial would have a field day. It would become your word against his about powder loads, whether you loaded them hot with the intent of greater force.
Like I said, I don't reload, someone with more experience will surely chime in.

IMO, it is a waste of time, I do not reload, but realistically you don't need hollow points for plinking and or target shooting so what is the point, if HD/SD then just shell out $15.00 - $20 and get some good HD/SD rounds and be done with it, you will want to function test a mag or two and then they will just remain dormant until needed.

Do you have a link to the kit?
Also, I agree with Panoz and Broomhead. Just from the sound of it, I'd think it's a waste of time. I'll check out the link and make a more educated comment.

I'll try to find it. It was in their printed catalog but I can't seem to find it on line.

gimmick. they've been around for years. if you want a hollow point round, buy a hollow point round. if you really want hollowpoint lead bullets just buy a saeco mold that molds HPs.

Drill 9MM Hollow Point??
I have heard the argument about reloading for SD. I have to agree that i would rather have factory loads, for the sole purpose that in case you did have to use them there is not legal ramifications due to ammo. The argument could be made that you were trying to make a deadlier round., with the intent of killing rather than stopping an attacker.
the other problem i see is getting a consistent boolit weight. load data might be a problem. also if the hole is not drilled perfectly center or a small shaving left in the cavity, there could be spin issues with the boolit being out of balance..
Go to the next gun show and pick yourself a box of winchester ranger +P+ rounds.

Drill 9MM Hollow Point??
A while back I did some experimenting with this idea. I used .22 ammo because 1) it was fairly safe and 2) I knew I would not shoot through my "ballistic test device".
Take a look at my link.
