I have owned the 500, 835, and 535, all were great guns, the 500 we called the meat gun because it killed so many deer and pheasants... Coast to coast, sears, westernfield, and many other stores/companies had there own versions back in the 80's or maybe earlier they were mossberg 500's with a dept store name stamped on them.. you may find one used for a good price. The difference between them is the x35's are 3 1/2 inch chambered shotguns the 535 looks like the 500 with 3 1/2" option rather that 2 3/4 or 3 inch. Any one of them I beleive is a great choice, the mav. I have never shot or even held so I cant really say, I had a 535 but never used it so I sold it to a friend, I use my 1187 for almost all my hunting and I have been thinking of getting the mossberg 935 which is a 3 1/2" chambered semi auto, I cant wait to talk the wife into letting me spend the $$$ on it.

Another difference. The 500s are drilled and tapped already for a scope. The 88 is not. Interesting though I saw a pair of 88s in a pawn shop ($150 ea) that looked like they had the 500 foregrip. The end had the threaded nut on it. The 88 are that way normally , correct ??

I think they are BOTH good guns. Just more stuff fits on the Mossberg 500. I have the 500 12ga all tricked out.

do the various aftermarket parts interchange?
Most parts do IIRC. I know the 88's use Mossberg Accu-Chokes and barrels.
I bought a Mossberg 18.5" barrel for my 88 Field Model.

are the 88s just 500s with a cheaper stock?
The internet word is "Mavericks are Mexican made Mossbergs."

They are made in texas
I live a little bit south of Houston and i think i can provide some input as to what he means. At this point TEXAS IS MEXICO!

I have an 88 that was given to me and it came with the ribbed barrel and a slug barrel. I have used it extensively for hunting water foul and game birds with great returns. Yes it does wear on your shoulder with the 3" shells but the only complaint I have with it is that I don't have the range of the guns that have slightly longer barrels. This gun does what it was designed to do. Shoot and decimate what it is aimed at. The action on it is very smooth and once or twice I have been asked if I was firing a semi-auto! I found it to be a rugged and take a beating.

For the price of it, I can't beat its performance.

CHIMO!
