Almost a B&E(True Story)
So, this morning around 4am, my 85Lb boxer goes barking mad. I know my dog's bark..I can tell when it's happy or scared with his bark. I hear a loud "popping" noise, and it's coming from my living room. Again, then dog is going insane. I grab my JHP.45, take the trigger lock off(I've got 2 lil kids), and shuck a round into the action. I can still hear a noise in the livingroom. As I walk in there with a lil LED flashlight, I can see my window unit(AC) moving around a tad. My wife calls 911 at that moment. There is someone trying to remove my window AC and gain access into my home. I yell to whomever it is outside the window that we've called the local PD and that I am armed with a .45. At one point, I even said "If you so much put a finger inside my house, I'll **** you up man!" Within 3, I repeat, 3 minutes...the cops were here and the fool was caught inside my fence. Thinking back on it...I should have opened the door and let Champ, my boxer, have his way with the BG. But my pets are family, and I was afraid he might be in danger as well. BG's have no problem killing a dog I assume.
Long story short, I've been out of work today, signing statements made at PD, and now I am home taking all my window units out of my house for right now. I honestly, trully never ever want to hurt anyone...but that crackhead trying to B&E my house, almost lost his head this morning...physically, not literally. However, I felt a great ease in this...knowing I was safe to a certain point throughout the whole ordeal. I felt like Buford Pusser of "walking tall"...but instead of carrying a big stick...I carry a JHP.45. Truthfully, I'm glad no one got hurt...and thankfully the cops arrived in time. Helluva way to wake up at 4am tho!

Re: Almost a B&E(True Story)
At least its a story with a happy ending so far! Although the fool will probably get off with a slap on the wrist the way all the jails and prisons are overcrowded and the states have no money. Too bad they don't open a "crackhead season" so we could 'thin the herd' a bit!
You know its a crackhead when (A) the dog started barking and he didn't get the hell out of there (B) you told him that you called the cops and were armed and he didnt even make it out of the fenceline! He sounds like one of those criminals that leaves behind a cell phone or his DL...

Sketchy! Glad you had the dog to alarm you. Dog's are usually a deterent to a criminal, this one must have been all cracked out to ignore that AND saying you had a gun.

Re: Almost a B&E(True Story)
Brad, Do you think he was trying to get into the home, or just trying to steal your AC unit for scrap copper? The reason I ask is because of the drug addicts around my parts have been known to go underneath old churches and such to steal their copper fittings, piping, and plumbing. (and a few AC units have been rendered useless, too)

DO YOU KNOW MY COUSIN ? Once while robbing a Catholic church he was trying to remove something from a wall display, his face was inches from a security camera. Then broke into a drugstore at nite, got nothing. But he did leave his wallet behind. HE WAS ADOPTED into the family, by the way.

Re: Almost a B&E(True Story)
I would suspect strongly the copper was his main goal. Ignoring the dog (especially the barking of a BIG dog) indicates to me he was either way way way stupid or planning on grabbing the a/c and bailing. Ignoring my Yorkies not such an issue unless you wanna be toe-less.
But I agree, one hand inside house he shot once, then I would quickly reassess and it likely would appear I missed because there was no reaction so I fired again.
