Default Range Report 3-7-10

finally got some good weather to try to sight in the new TS Carbine. Had some wind-age adjustment issues (couldn't figure out how to adjust it) any suggestions?? I was going to just move the rear sight over slightly but the only allen wrench I didn't have was one to fit those screws. Rifle was shooting slightly right.
I wanted to sight it in on either the 25 or 50 yd range but they were packed so I ended up at 100 yds.
The rifle performed flawlessly, no jams, no FTE and no misfires. Three people came up to inquire about what I was shooting. All were impressed, one guy already knew of the Highpoint Carbines and had good things to say. Two of them mentioned that it really shoots quiet. One wanted to know where he could get a spring loaded butt plate.
I was shooting 100yds, stock iron sights, beanbag rest and 60 year old eyes. All in all I was very pleased with the accuracy and overall operation. looking forward to another session to figure out the wind-age.

First, thanks for your service Dana! Second, the 995 will not fail to keep you smiling. I might suggest an inexpensive red dot sight. I shot my 995 for a year of so will great success, but suffered from aging eyes as well. The reflex sight I just put on helps tremendously. Ringing the plate at 100yards is a kick and attracts a lot of attention when they see its a carbine! Bulldog

from North Idaho. Semper Fi, Brother. You'll really get a kick out of the carbine. I've had mine for a couple of months, and really enjoy it. I stuck a Bushnell scope on mine (it was the only scope I had unattached at the time), and managed to run groups of under 4" at 100 yards. Not too bad for a pistol caliber carbine. Get lots of ammo, and enjoy.

danasmith...the tool that came with your gun is used to adjust the rear sights for windage and elevation. A small screwdriver is used, not an allen wrench.
However, the front sight base on many TS's are not put on straight, that DOES require an allen wrench, IIRC...
So if you start getting your rear sight WWAAAYY over to the side (left side, I think most have seen) then you would want to rotate your front sight base a little.

And congrats on a great gun!
OH! :wideeyed2: and I just noticed you were shooting 100 yards! NICE SHOOTING!

Thanks for the help. I was only going to move the entire rear sight assembly as a last resort. I pretty much had the adjustment figured out but it was real stiff and the rear sight would rock back and forth but the screw would not turn and allow the sight to move left or right. I have since put a drop of penetrant on it worked till it turns and adjust quite nicely now. I think I'll make another trip to the 100yd line with the iron sights now that I can adjust them, then pick up a red dot or something similar. What's the favorite here on the forum?

went back out to the range today with my new Leapers 6X32 scope. This target is a box of 50 rounds after some preliminary adjustment, shot at 50yds. I would have concentrated on moving the groups into the 10 ring better but started having "hold open issues" Every time I fired the last round in the mag the bolt would lock open (read that seized up). I would have to stick something in the open breech and grab the bolt handle and pull back really hard with both hands to get the bolt to break loose. It would load and fire fine all the way through each mag to the point of holding open then seize up. Anyone else experience this issue??
When I got home I tore it down, didn't see any problem and working the bolt by hand on an empty mag it works fine. Baffled about what's going on.

Dana:

You have the new TS? Using the new mag that came with it? Then it's the LRHO. Drop the mag and the bolt should cycle close.

its a "last round hold open" feature on the new carbines. its supposed to stay open, and when you put another loaded mag in just rack it back and let it fly.

I guess I wasn't clear on my issue. I know the bolt is supposed to hold open after the last shot. Situation is bolt holds open and you drop the mag, but you can't move the bolt. It's seized, wedged stuck. Won't go forward, won't go back. Had to use two hands, one on the bolt handle and the other on a wrench stuck into the open breech, put the rifle butt in my stomach and pull rearward on the bolt with both hands to free it up. Then it would go forward and cycle normally until it reached the last round again. If I changed mags before running out the rifle continues to cycle normally. It's only when it goes to "hold open" that it sticks and I mean TIGHT.

Interesting. Sounds like something in the LRHO is jamming somehow. I have no idea how to help with that...
Anybody else...?

If you haven't already, try a thread titled LRHO jam question, or something like that, and see if you get any help?
