Default Simmons scope = junk

Picked up a cheap $60 Simmons 3-9x40 scope for my new ruger 10/22. I wouldn't normally buy a cheap scope like this but I figured that it would be ok on a .22 with little recoil.

I mounted it and took it out today to sight it in. The first few shots hit paper but were low and to the left so I wound it up and to the right by 5 clicks in the dial. I fired 6 more shots and the scope broke!!....the cross hairs dropped out of position and fell loose in the scope body.

Less than 12 rounds and this thing was broken. I can't blame the recoil as I was just shooting regular .22lr rounds.

My first experience of Simmons and I'm unimpressed. I have no receipt to return the scope but if I pay $10 plus shipping Simmons will fix it.

Steer clear guys

My favorite rifle has a Simmons scope on 3-9x40 also. My dad bought the gun used with the scope already on it so not sure of its age but I have been hunting with and shooting this gun for around 15 years. The gun is a .308 steyr.

I have it to the range at least a few times a year and it rides around in the truck an goes for many walks in the woods over the 2 weeks of deer season. The scope may not be the exact model you have since it is a little older but In at least the last 3 years I haven't touched any adjustments on the scope. It has always just been an over pleasure. Granted not sure it's the scope I would have bought for it but it has proven to be a very good one for me

I have several Simmons scopes, no issues with any of them. They aren't high end scopes...in fact, I wouldn't pay more than $30-$40 for one...but it sounds like you got a real lemon.

Basically, the Simmons, Tasco, BSA, Barska...all those low end $50 type scopes are the same. Some are good, some aren't. I've been lucky enough to get decent ones, none have failed me. Some were on guns I bought, some were bought on sale, as in, marked down to $25. I need to count, but I'd bet I have 20 scopes, at least. None of them are high dollar units, except three used ones that are no longer made, and they aren't really high dollar, they are just collectors items.

But I do make sure, when buying one, that I can take the scope back and get a replacement or refund. Haven't had to yet.

I have a few older simmons that are real champs on .22 and .22 WMR and they have been very good scopes for the $$. Bought a 10/22 from a friend and it had a simmons ontop that was cloudy. I paid the $10 and sent the scope back to simmons. They sent me a brand new scope that was better and nicer than the no longer made model I sent them. Cant complain here......

I have a couple Simmons mounted on .22s and have worked fine. In your case you have to send it to Simmons for repair or you have thrown $60 down the hole. I think when you get it back you'll be please with the scope.

Good info.

I am getting into optics now and hope to avoid these pitfalls
Got a new scope (wallyworld, $16) TASCO and hope it works OK on my 22 and 17 HMR. If not on the HMR, I can use it in he 22magnum and get a BSA Sweet 17 maybe

Same scope on my Remington 760 30-06.. been there for 25+ years now... Never an issue... Might take a click or two at the opening of the season every few years to keep it dialed in but nothing more then that... I think you my have gotten a bad one... Happens from time to time... QC is never perfect with manufactured items...

OK Simmons isn't a NightForce. I've got a Simmons 44MAG on a 22WMR and it's been faithful.

I would guess you picked up a 8-Point Model. Yes those are Junk in my opinion, but as in all Scopes---no matter the cost, you'll get good ones and you'll get lemons. There's just fewer lemons on the higher costing ones.

I bough a $300+ Weaver Scope for my B'day a few years back to go on a new Weatherby 243, and Scope was broken right out of Box. The Elevation/Windage wouldn't hold POI. Had to send to Warranty to get repaired. It HAPPENS to even some of the BEST.

Also Bushnell/Simmons/Tasco are all joined at the Hip nowadays. This isn't bad, as Bushnell will make Tasco and Simmons into better Scopes.

If anyone here likes Simmons, and is looking for a bargain scope, Dick's has one right now. Normally $50, on sale for $30
