Got this in email form. Forgive me if it's already been posted recently, havn't been spending much time round here.

#1 Gun rule: 'Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he's too old to fight, he'll just kill you.'
Well, here's the proof:

The 71-year-old retired Marine who opened fire on two robbers at a Plantation, FL, sub shop late Wednesday, killing one and critically wounding the other, is described as John Lovell, a former pilot for two presidents. He doesn't drink, he doesn't smoke, he works out everyday. Lovell was a man of action Wednesday night. According to Plantation police, two masked gunmen came into the Subway at 1949 N. Pine Rd. Just after 11 p.m. There was a lone diner -- Lovell, who was finishing his meal. After robbing the cashier, the two men attempted to shove Lovell into a bathroom and rob him as well. They got his money. But then Lovell pulled his handgun, opened fire, shooting one of the thieves in the head and chest and the other in the head. When police arrived, they found one of the men in the shop. K-9 units found the other in the bushes of a nearby business.

They also found cash strewn around the front of the sandwich shop according to Detective Robert Rettig of the Plantation Police Department. Both men were taken to Broward General Medical Center , where one, Donicio Arrindell, 22, of North Lauderdale died. The other, 21-year-old Frederick Gadson of Fort Lauderdale is in critical but stable condition.

A longtime friend of Lovell was not surprised to hear what happened. ''He'd give you the shirt off his back, and he'd be mad if someone tried to take the shirt off your back,'' he said. Lovell worked as a pilot for the Marines, flying former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson.

He later worked as a pilot for Pan Am and Delta. Lovell is not married and does not have children.

He is not expected to be charged, authorities said ''He was in fear for his life,'' Rettig said. 'These criminals ought to realize that most men in their 70's have military backgrounds and aren't intimidated by idiots.

The only thing he could be charged with is participating in an unfair fight. One 71 -year young Marine against two punks.

Two head shots and one center-body-mass shot - good shooting! That'll teach them not to get between a Marine and his meal. Don't you just love a story with a happy ending?

( Florida law allows law-abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon.)

Wow, no views and no reponses...hell i thought it was good damnit! Bump to the top!
Don't get upset, I just now got a chance to read it, and you are right about it. I remember reading about this when it happened and wondered why the authorities didn't praise him rather than mumble that he's likely not be charged. At least this is somewhat better.

When a person does something like this, there should be some public recognition; maybe the Chamber of Commerce and local government should present him an award.

I do believe this was posted about a month ago. Still a great story though, so I don't at all mind seeing it posted again. :)

Improvise, adapt, and overcome.

He allowed the punks to get him into the restroom, getting the workers out of the line of fire, then gave the punks everything he had including the bullets.

Score another one for the Corps.

I remember reading something to the same effect in Thailand where there was an armed robbery and when one of the gunmen tried to wave his weapon around demanding money from the patrons of the place. He came up to one man who quietly put his money into the thief's backpack, but the gunman thought he was "holding back" and tried to pistol whip him. He ended up getting disarmed and his accomplice ran off.

Turns out the man was a former police officer who joined a monastary after his retirement. Robbing a former cop AND a monk. Genius.

Yep. That's a criminal for you... because if they weren't they'd have the smarts to get a real job.

Old guys have bones that hurt by themselves.

They are not willing to let you make them hurt more, so they WILL shoot you to keep you from making them ache more than they already do.

Unless you get lucky and find a liberal anti gun old man, then he is just SOL.

I don't know, it happened in Florida, not up north and he is a retired person.

My money is on he walks free, which by all rights he should.

Hell, the perp that lived is the one that better be worried, he pissed off a Marine, the old man accidentally let one get away, you know that old fellow is mad that he didn't take him out too!

Might decide to hunt the little punk down to correct the score :)

Nono. I mean he's in trouble with the USMC. I'm pretty sure when you bag asshats, they insist you confirm each kill :)
