If moneys not an issue then I have to go with Colt for a base model Kimber is brand worship and they have gotten rediculously over priced for what they are. SA makes a really good 1911 and the Loaded model is awsome BANG for the buck but I would still rather have a Colt.

What's a good AFFORDABLE 1911. I would love to get one, but don't feel like shelling out 800+ for a pistol.
RIA and Taurus both make affordable 1911s.

Rock Island Armory (parent company is Armscor) got mine brand new OTD for $435. It is an excellent shooter, stock you can take a place in a competition. Primal took 3rd with his RIA .38 Super at a shooting Comp. The company makes their 1911 most like the original pistol compared to any other brand, you can put any M1911A1 custom part on it and it will work fine.

Kimber gets bashed alot around here but I own 2, A Custom2 and a Grand Raptor and I love them both.
I don't think the bashers have ever owned one, more like "I knew a guy that..."

IMHO, if money is no object then I would go with a Wilson Combat (My dream gun)

i owned a kimber for exactly six rounds. on the sixth, the internal extrator failed and teid up my gun soild, requiring a factory return. i expect more than that when i spend 1200$+ on a pistol. my 500$ glock has fired over 20,000 rounds and never failed me.

Both of my Kimbers have thousands of rounds through them also and without failures.

to my mind, modern designs have eclipsed the 1911. while its not obsolete, there newer desgins that do the same job just as weel if not better.

Sigs line of 1911s have been considered the 21st century design of the pistol.

SW,

What brand do you feel surpasses the 1911? Not trying to start anything...but ever since I bought mine something has just clicked.

I've shot Glock .40S&W, Heritage RR 22lr/mag, Para 1911 and own all the following; hi-point c9, Springfield 1911, Taurus Judge, Beretta 92FS and Charter Arms 38SP Snubby.

While I enjoy all the handguns I have fired and owned I still say the basic mil-spec 1911-A1 is the best mix I have owned in reliability, stopping power, maintenance, capacity, conceal carry and accuracy. I'm not saying there are not better handguns. Just want to know what you have in mind. Personally i'd like to try some more out.

The Glock was nice. But unfortunately I wasn't any more accurate then with my 92FS which so-so in my opinion.

SIGs P series of pistols run circles around it for accuracy and durability with modern desgin cues including decocker, better sights, better ergonomics and more durable design with better materials. for teh plastic fantastic crowd, either 3rd generation glock or the beretta Px series pistols have the same advatages with addition of light weight and reliability that verges on foolproof. the only thing they lack is the decocker of the SIG deigns. the 1911 design is a fine platform, but outdated IMHO.

Yeah I passed up on a Storm and regret it till this day. 399 new from a police contract that was canceled. Got my 92FS the same way. But this was just this past year. The .40S&W Glock was 3rd gen. Again not a bad gun. I would dabble in the Glock/Storm compact model pistols for conceal carry in the future.

The big question is the SIG. Are you referring to the SIG226 that the Beretta won the military contract for. Or a different model in general.

Thanks again for your reply.

If money is not a issue go with a colt. They did it first and they did it right. YOu will never look back........(I know i know browning actually came up with the concept and colt tuned it but thats apples and oranges) ^-^
