My neighbor is an MP E-4 CPL.

Just had a 1120pm chat and told him of the trade I made with waltham41.

He then told me that some of the guys are using them as there carbine in the squad car.

I double ask to be sure he was talking about the Hi-Point. He was very sure and clear that he was.

Now he had to go to bed, Long day and all so details were not brought up.

I was unable to ask if it were the Civilian police force or if he was talking about the Junction City police. Nearest town off post. Or Manhattan, Second closest. >>> No not Manhatan NY. I am talking about the City that K state is in.

He is not at all one who tells stories or anything of the like.

Also He is a true Patriot and american hero. One whom I rexpect very much. And has come home From Iraq early and now works for the Game Warden. With bad injuries to the brain from IED. Great guy.

You should all by now know that I do not Talk bad about the carbine at all.
BUT, do have some reservations as to using it as your go to SHTF battle weapon. Even if it is a small town police cruiser run of the mil officer.

He himslef doesnt talk bad, ABOUT THE CARBINE> But shares my concern.

I will be interogating him further later.

This isn't the first time I've heard of hi-points being used by LE.More than one small town with a limited budget has opted for the hi-point carbines.Since you can buy five for the price of one AR, they are reliable, and in longer range situations are a better choice than a sidearm.Mine is a tack driver at 50 yds, I would be lucky to keep any of my pistols on paper at that distance...Once again shot placement becomes critical, if you can't hit your target you can't stop your target!

I was contacted by a LE officer in OK (sheriff, I believe) about supplying parts to upgrade the 995 to something similar to pumpgunner's (that full rail, OD green ATI). Dont know if it was for personal use or as a departmental issue but his signature had name, rank, department, all kinds of contact numbers.... like as if he sent if from work.

Unfortunatly I never heard back from him.

There was one LEO on the board that got one trying to talk his force into using them, they were a small force and could not afford to equip everyone with a AR

Unfortunately, he put it in a ATI stock, and there were problems, so the department changed their minds.

I think that if left in the original stock, they may be fugly, but they are very dependable weapons.

If used by a police force, they should be well maintained of course, which would IMO give them the 100% dependably then need to have given the situation.

After I got my 4095, I was laughed at by the other range dogs in my office, so the Sgt told me to do some research. I got a list from Shirley and it has plenty of departments and correctional facilities on it. Most that I have contacted so far used them for awhile then eventually went to ARs after the Homeland Security Grants began coming through. Most of the HPs were bought right after 911 and everyone was scrambling for carbines to equip officers with. Some were departments that allowed their officers to buy them through the department and use them on-duty. One prison warden told me they still have them, love them and can do head-shots from 100 yards all day long. He was quite proud of the 995s.

Just as a reminder, yes, Hi Point did at one time maintain a list of LEO departments which either authorized, approved, or purchased Hi Point carbines for use.

I haven't heard about it in a while, but the list may still be available.

I know I purchased mine thru my department, granted at my expense. However with the Leo discount I got on the weapon, cmore sight and eagletac light.I got a hell of shooter at a great price.
I use mine on our scirt team. Like a multi jurisdiction swat team.
I get grief, till they run it..
Then not so much!

As a Active Duty MP, I'm having difficulty seeing this getting okay doked by the higher ups. Why issue HPs on base when the arms room is full of ARs? The DA Coppers have access to the same stuff that the MPs have. Maybe a few have their own kit while on patrol, that's "off the books". I'm having difficulties seeing this pass the smell test. The PM on base would have kittens if he found out that we were carrying our own stuff.

Its "The Army", they tend to be really anal about this kinda stuff...rules, regs and all. If you've ever been in the military, you know what I mean.

I think you maybe misunderstood the post. It's a list of LEO departments which have approved HP firearms (usually the carbines).

As far as carrying your own stuff goes, most LEO departments aren't exactly like the MP's. Some force officers to buy their own firearms. Others will allow officers to buy and carry their own secondary/backup firearms from a list of department approved firearms. Some departments will allow officers to carry whatever they want in addition to their duty firearm.

I have a brother that is a part time deputy sheriff. He works weekends only & special occasions. He must furnish his own weapons. He can carry anything he can qualify with. He carries a Glock 22, & just recently bought a Mossberg shotgun. I told him about the Keltec S2K 40 Glock. He said he would be allowed to carry it if he qualified with it.

I agree 100% ...

There is no way that a Provost Marshals Office will approve weapons outside of the normal inventory, DA Officers or not. Hell, with me being a K9 MP I had to go through hoops with approvals from the PMO in order to use specialized eqiupment that was required and needed to perform and carry out my duties as K9.

Oh yeah, Provost Marshal would have a serious S/F if he found out that someone was carrying something "off the books". I'd see a free expense paid vacation to Kansas in someones future, if they did.

As has already been pointed out by both MachoMelvin and me, there are many small town PD's which do, in fact, require LEO to provide their own gear, including firearms.

Turns out it's pretty darn common.

So, the question really isn't applicable to, nor intended for MP's. It's a good thing you didn't "call anyone out" because your supposition that it didn't "pass the smell test" was unfortunately wrong.

I'm just speaking to the military side. The original comment was that a MP/DA Copper was carrying a HP as a Patrol Carbine. I use to work as a City Copper in KCMO. They woulda had a S/F if you carried something "off the books" too. I realize that equiping yourself is indicitive to a small agency.

I'll have to ask my brother in law about fort Riley. He works on post in ammunition accounting and supply

I'm pretty sure that anyone who is carrying a non-DoD-issued carbine on duty at Ft. Riley is doing so without authorization. I have a certain level of previous experience with that particular installation, and I can tell you that even trying to get non-standard ammo issued for road duty was a non-starter. Maybe something changed in the ammo arena since then, but I would be shocked if commercial carbines were being authorized.
