My dad had some old bows at the house and I took one from him to turn into a bowfishing bow with the AMS kit. http://www.pickaspotarchery.com/product/AMS-Retriever-Pro-Combo-Kit

However, there are some issues I need addressed. It's an early 90's PSE Pulsar with a draw of 29" and weight from 45-60 lbs.

It for sure needs a new string and new cables, but I was wondering if there was any way to adjust the draw length on it. Because it is so old once it is set for bowfishing it will stay that way. So I would like a draw of about 27" and the weight at 45 or lower if it's possible. Is it adjustable on these old bows or am I doomed to over draw for the life of it?

What is the likely hood of them being able to slap some smoother cams onto it? I can't afford a new bow just for fishing, especially when the chances of me dropping it in the river are pretty high.

Yeah, I'm taking it to a reputable shop when I get a little spare cash. But in the mean time I wanted to learn as much as I could.

I have this problem with being stupid about products I am paying for. I would rather be educated and play dumb so I can tell if the guy is trying to take me for a ride.

Take a trip over to archery network GPR or Grandpa Richard will be able to answer any question you have. Unless you have a bow press, you will not be able to change the string. It is not like the recurve bows that you just bend over your knee.

Also and this is the biggest thing I have to tell you, watch out when bow fishing. You need a break away attachment from the bow to the arrow. I have had the string get caught on the bow and it came back at me at the speed of sound. Bow fishing is great fun. But you do need to watch out for the bounce back. I have read stories where the shooter got it in the head. Not good.

I couldn't find much out about it after searching most of the afternoon. When I get some cash saved up I am just going to take it to the shop and tell the guy I want a new string and cables, and if its possible to knock 2 inches off the draw to do it, then turn it down to about 45 lbs.

Like I said, its an old beater and I just want it set up fresh so I can be safe while walking the banks.

Although all this searching did get me excited about shooting. This summer I may have to go get fitted for a new compound. Those things kick way more ass than when I was a kid. How can you beat cams with an 80% let off, you can run through the woods all day chasing critters at full draw.

I have a PSE Beast. I have more arrows through it then I care to think about. I used to come home from work and pull about 100 arrows a day. Of course I did work up to it.

When I started to look for a bow, I went to every local and some not so local bow shops. I picked up my complete setup, bow, sight, rest, quiver, carbon arrows, release, case, harness, arm guard, range time, check out after 3 months, everything I needed for right around $650.00. I picked this place because they did not try to put me into a $2,000.00 setup.

One place wanted me to get a $800.00 bow and then all of the other stuff.

If you do get a bow, you will get more upper body strength. Practice, practice, practice. I did end up getting all of the fletching supplies too. I had to. I was getting charged $1.00 a fletch on my arrows. I was tearing them up every day. I spent about $150.00 on that stuff and can do it from now on.

I was actually interested in building a warf bow out of the receiver I have. But by the time I finish it I will be out the price of a decent fishing recurve.

For target and hunting though I really want to get back into a nice mid level compound now. With the high amount of let off that they are capable of now it would make it so much more enjoyable to sneak up on some turkeys with a bow. I want to learn how to instinct shoot one, I am decent with a recurve and an old wooden compound with no sights my dad has.

Damn, after yesterday and today I can't wait to get out to the archery shop and get fitted and start trying out new ones. Too bad work doesn't start up for another month.

Don't get me wrong, I love the simplicity of a selfconstruct bow. But advances in the technology are what got humans to where we are now (for good or bad I guess). As long as there is a shop to service a bow that is comfortable for me to shoot I will use it.

That being said. I am very interested in the Mongolian recurve design. Those things look cutting edge for the time frame they were used in.

those were/are great bows, After reading the history of the Mongols, and the Scythians, and other Turko-Mongol tribes of the "Steppes" , I thought that it would be a fun project for me.........until I looked at what they wanted for the price of the horn, and the sinew, and the hide glue......well...lets just say that it falls under " the things I want to do if i win the lotto" catagory....lol. The Turkish flight bows were know to throw an arrow over 1,000 yds.....would be epic to see that.....especially during the battles they had back then

I just had my hoyt bow restrung at the local shop. The strings were 7 years old and I didn't know they needed to be replaced more often. The bow feels totally different now and is shooting really good. I can't wait for the season to arrive.
