just curious. and if they are legally classified as something else what is it?

Nope, they're fine, as far as the Feds are concerned, State or local laws may vary. This is assuming they don't actually reduce the sound AT ALL! even lowering the sound level by 1db classifies it as a real suppressor.

A fake suppressor is basically just making the barrel a little longer. As long as it's smooth on the inside and doesn't appear to be made to alter the sound in any way, it's fine. If you put grooves or fins on it, you might be worried then. Even attempting to build a real suppressor without a license is dealt with pretty harsh, so make sure it's good and smooth on the inside and you'll be fine.
