They do sell aftermarket metal hammers for it.

I was annoyed enough having to upgrade the guide rod in my M-9.

I agree, the plastic hammer is ridiculous. So far though, I've yet to find a single case of one failing after searching around online.

I despise the M-9 as the POS that it is, with its obnoxious frame-mounted safety/decocker and its design that is way too ungainly for its capacity.

Nevertheless, I never found the guide rod to have been in need of an upgrade beyond the Lasermax that I bought for mine before my first deployment. What kind of problems were you getting from yours?

The problem with mine was I kept breaking it. It was the weirdest thing parts would be missing or bent.;-) so I carried a old 1911 that I got from a SGM that was from my home state :-D

So, you're worried about a failure in 20 (or whatever) years? Plastic doesn't have the durability of metal, but it can last for a while.

Wouldn't a plastic hammer be a good thing?

Lighter, faster lock time, more accuracy?

It's not like it has to handle pressure or anything.

You guys got ripped off. Every M-9 I've been issued had a metal guide rod.

Moonz, speaking of missing parts, did that stupid camming piece under the barrel keep falling off of your M-9 barrel?

Why does my distrust of plastic guide rods bother you so? It's the first thing I get rid of. Even before the first range trip. Just call it a personal preference and move on. Much like how I won't carry a firearm that doesn't have an exposed hammer.

Dunno. It was brandy new and came with a plastic one. It was an unexpected surprise that I quickly remedied.

Why does his question about your distrust of plastic bother you so?

    He's just asking.

Say it's a personal preference, and move on.
