Rifle! Find someone in TX with land who wants dead hogs. You might get to hunt for free if you can get a foot in the door. My nephew lives in TX, up in the hill country. He knows a landowner who lets us in for free just to remove some of the hogs

Pogo and Albert. Used to read the comics as a wee lad. Albert was an alligator and they lived in the swamp IIRC.

  6. I’ve only been hunting once, didn’t see anything except the brown bear that appeared out of the trees 50’ in front of my soon to be ex-fiancés brother in law. He stuck it with a fonking crossbow bolt when it stood up, it slapped at the bolt, dropped to all fours and charged. Dropped dead ten feet away and slid to a stop nose touching his BIL’s toes.

Once in a life experience. Literally.

I can buy a firearm any time.

I would opt for the “stalk” hunt rather then the canned blind “hunt” as that’s not a hunt in my book.
    That’s a joke.
Birthday next month, figure I’d start a little earlier.

I vote hunt shoot a big tusker and do a European mount just the skull. cheaper and easier to take care of. You might be able to do that yourself skin the head and boil it until the meat is mush. Lightly pressure wash it.

I voted for the hunt. Florida has its share of feral hogs, a real hunt should not be a problem. I would not do a "canned hunt" , but you have made it clear that you won’t anyway.

Limited experience with the 783, but It was generally good. I shot one in 7mm Mag. Accurate, good trigger, kicks like a mule, and the scope sucks. It did not have near enough eye relief. It seems to be the Marlin X7, which I likes as well. Still, the 783 doesn’t interest me much. For a budget rifle, I like the T/C Compass.

Can’t think about a new Remington rifle without thinking about the Remington Model 7 Laminate. I would take this rifle over the hog hunt. You can bloody the Model 7 later!

The 783 Varmint laminate is another I would take over the hog hunt.

Get the gun when you're too old to tromp in the woods. As a bonus, the hunt gives you something else to talk about in the nursing home between games of bingo (someday).

Just for myself, I think "gored to death by a wild boar because the hunter used fmj's" is way better than, "died incoherent after 3 weeks of hospice inducing a morphine coma."

Sooo... do the real deal trip...

@SWAGA I vote for the rifle, and I say you can (and will) organize your own hunt. You have friends in Texas, and Colorado, and Indiana, (Mole) etc... oh, this just in:

    RAMSEY says: RIFLE

The .308 will definitely last longer than the hunt will, but a hog hunt could well be a once in a lifetime event. I'd go with the hunt and get the .308 later.
    Happy birthday!
