Comments made in the year 1955!
That's only 53 years ago! :D :D :'( :D

'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $20.00.

'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $2, 000.00 will only buy a used one.

'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. A quarter a pack is ridiculous.

'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging a dime just to mail a letter

'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 29 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more. Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.

'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down in Texas ..

'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $75,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.

'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.

'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.

'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.

'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress.

'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.

'There is no sense going to Lincoln or Omaha anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $15.00 a night to stay in a hotel..

'No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $35.00 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.'

'If they think I'll pay 50 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

AAaaa yes, do YOU remember when???

But, in 53 years who'd think that I would be:

-Running a "virtual" community of shooters from a device smaller than a deck of cards that also enables me to watch TV, read books, talk to family all over the globe and send pictures, video and music all over the place

-Driving a Taxicab that gets nearly 60 miles to the gallon

-Irritated that people actually use "cash" to pay for services

-Walking around on an kneecap made of synthetic materials just fine after being hit on a motorcycle by a Suburban at 70mph (with injuries that would've killed me 53 years ag)

-Getting upset that it takes more than 30 seconds for my bank/doctor/boss/family to reply to a message I sent them from 8,000 miles away

-If my taxi or my motorcycle were stolen, I could have it found by it's LoJack transponder in less than 2 hours?

-That I could survive being shot at point blank range and suffer very little to no damage just because of a few milimeters of material?

Yes, the "good ole days" may be gone, but compared to what we have...I think we're doing ok :D

And people say that the money on the space program was wasted.

I remember in the early 70's in the little town that I grew up in our ambulance was the undertakers hearse with a mag mount red light and a nurse.

I do... Hell, we only had 3 channels, without an antenna and rabbit ears don't work. Sucked HARD.

I do remember watching the original Batman TV show with the BLAM! WHAMMO! graphics on the screen... Of course, that was back when the Andy Griffth Show was still running in syndication on network TV. The only station we really got was MNPTV, Minnesota Public TV was actually pretty good.

Very true....

My Grandfather on my Dad's side was declared clinically dead after 65 seconds of no "vital response" (What they used to call it after you stopped breathing. It seemed that they thought once you stopped breathing you were "dead" dead). Something about no oxygen to the brain.

Fast forward a few decades...

I was "dead" for 2:58 seconds, defibed twice...and I'm still kicking! Of course, that was lack of breathing which HARDLY means dead these days. And, this, as was mentioned before, all done in the air before we landed at The hospital (The nearest one by land wasn't a full trauma centre at that time, and the next nearest one was under constrution, so I had to be flown from the Tempe/Mesa border to Central Phoenix).

As for the space program, I think we should be doing FAR more investment in it!! There is NO reason why we shouldn't be on Mars RIGHT NOW mining and manufacturing at this moment! The Russians are STILL decades ahead in spaceflight technology and they're still committed. We should be as well. Humanity can only gain from moving beyond. If we did, you think the advancements in 53 years are impressive?

Using the first inflation calculator I found on google, $1 in 1955 is about the same as 7.66 in today's money.

Adjusting those prices for inflation:
week's groceries for $153

It won't be long before $15, 000.00 will only buy a used one.

$1.19 a pack is ridiculous.

76c just to mail a letter

at 7.66 nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.

2.22 a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.

574,500 a year just to play ball?

'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to congress. in 1955 the top tax rate was 91%, it was lowered to 70% in 1964, then again to 50% in 1981, and again to 28% in '86.. Someone in 1955 had to HOPE to live long enough to see it drop BELOW 50%

$115 a night to stay in a hotel..

$268.1 a day in the hospital it's too rich for my blood.'

$4 for a hair cut, forget it.'

Fourboxes, based on your 7.66 inflation rate, I would need to make twice as much as what I make today to just break even with inflation. NO one I knew paid that kind of tax rate.

Motel 6 in Tempe, AZ averages about 60 a night.

But, some of those other inflationary stats are interesting. If ONLY it cost $268.10 to stay in the hospital for one night!! And, $2.22 a gallon is LESS than I pay for the hi-octane stuff my bike requires ($2.28 as of today at a station in South Scottsdale)

Motel 6 started at $6.00 a night
Motel 8 Started at $8.00 a night. OK, what happened to that?

The government inflated the dollar in order to indirectly steal wealth. Businesses raised prices in order to keep up with inflated costs so they could stay in business. Motel 6 and Motel 8 didn't change their names...

Get ready for another round of run-away inflation to help make the budget look less off-balance!
