Wifey got a call today from one of her friends. She inherited a couple of guns when her dad passed away about a year ago.
Asked my wife if she would mind me teaching her how to shoot.
Partially disabled due to diabetes foot surgery late 50-ies.
So I talk to her over the phone and she would like me to teach her how to handle, shoot and clean her dads 1911, yeah the one I've been eyeballing.
And no she doesn't want to sell it.

So we're meeting Friday and when my wife heads off to work we're going to a nearby indoor range.

I was thinking about the following:
    Basic handling and safety checks
    I have .45 snap caps
    Dominant eye check
    Some trigger practice
One or two YouTube videos with me explaining.
To the range, buy their overpriced lead free BS ammo
Start real close like 6-7 feet to score some hits.
When the comfort level increase go to 10-15-20 feet and maybe a couple of shots at 30 feet of she's not overloaded by then.
I have two sets of electronic ear muffs.

    Did I forget anything?
Pretty cool that she considers me to do it!

You might consider having her shoot a smaller caliber pistol first.... The .45 is a little intimidating for a first time shooter.

just a though......purchase some HOT loads and make it hurt her a lil bit I bet she will sell it then.

Well for sure I'm going to start her off with only one round per magazine.
Not looking for any range accidents.
  5. Buy, some buffalo bore, or what ever HD load.

She will want rid of that thing like crazy.

Buy that STAR 9mm let her shoot it nice and heavy, with light 9mm loads.

    offer to trade straight up.

Great idea, make her not like shooting guns and possibly turn into anti-gun. :p

    It's a beautiful 1911.

She wants to keep THAT gun because of emotional value.
No idea how long her dad owned it, I'll find out.

Breaking it down and reassembling it properly. Can you? Because you're going to feel like an ass if you put an idiot mark on that beauty.

I know about the idiot mark lol
Just planning on taking the slide and barrel off.
But if she keeps it as a HD gun I'll probably take her to WalMart and get her a boresnake.

Or make it a habit to take her out target shooting real regular like so you can own that 1911 vicariously.

Step 1: NRA Basic Pistol Shooting or FIRST Steps Pistol Orientation class.

Failing that, Step 1: Buy NRA Basic Pistol Shooting book. It's like $10 new and ~$4 used (content hasn't changed much in decades). Read together, off site, with firearm and no live ammunition in the room.

Seriously, the book is 90% of the Basic Pistol Shooting class and lays it all out in a logical, progressive manner that will quickly bring knowledge up and give the basic tools to develop skills and costs the equivalent of 8 rounds of that goofy "environmentally friendly" range ammo.

Here's what one individual says about the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting handbook:

You might start her off on a .22 pistol before trying out the 1911. I'm sure this new shooter has a competent instructor in Swaga.

I'm pretty sure she's shot before as a teen since her dad had guns so she's not a complete no-no.
In between other stuff I need to do I'm compiling a bit of a mental list of what I want to cover.
I'll also dig up my .45 bore laser for some trigger practice.

Gives you more time to buy her the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting book.

Did I mention you should buy her the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting manual? ;)

Or he could download it for free if his Google-fu is strong.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need. ;)

Truth to be told, because I have bought my own copy, I've considered scanning it for my own personal use.
