Forbidden Foods

Some of my favorite foods are canned meat. All of them are bad for you. I have known this for all my life. I used to keep them stocked. I never keep them stocked now, but buy them as the craving hits me.

Breakfast this morning was centered around Corned Beef Hash. I just warmed up a single serve can and dropped an egg on top. I bet I have not had this breakfast in 2 years! Guess I will be satisfied for another 2 years. Good stuff!

Canned Sausage. This is a flavor you just do not get in any other way. I have never been able to make a patty out of it. My normal means of consumption is to steam up a pot of swamp seed, that’s rice for you who don’t know. Pile of it on my plate with the canned sausage ladled over it. Good stuff!

Potted Meat. I normally eat this on crackers. It makes an awesome sandwich as well. I try not to think what it is likely made from. Meat by products I am sure, stuff that has been rejected by the dog food factory. But it sure is tasty! I have not had this in I don’t know how long. Just might have to buy a tin or two this weekend.

Vienna Sausage. I eat these more often than any of the others. I usually have a tin or two in the cupboard. It’s the perfect snack, at least for us old folks who find bagged jerky too tough on the teeth. Probably made from compressed potted meat. It’s best to eat them right out of the can. Then drink the juice to wash it all down. They are almost the perfect backpacking meal. You can eat them plain, BBQ’ed, any number of ways. The empty tin makes the perfect spirit burner too! If you want a more substantial meal, vienna sausages make great fish bait too. Tear off a small piece to catch a bream, a whole sausage will catch you a catfish, or just dump the whole can in a crawfish trap, don’t forget to pour the juice in the water, it will help draw your quarry in, wether it be bream, catfish, crawfish, or all 3! Vienna Sausages, the perfect beginning to a meal of Louisiana Lobsters!

Dang….Marines will eat anything, won’t they.😜

Never could stand any of the canned meat, except Spam, which is like manna from heaven. Vienna sausages are evil, and the rest are offal…..get it?😉
Potted meat is like poor man’s Foie gras….but I don’t like the real stuff either.

Germany has some good ones though…Lyoner was a good one to slice out of the can onto bread. It’s like a Bologna flavored, looser textured pork lunch meat, it can be pink like bologna, but can also be more grey, like cooked pork. You can buy it in rolls or sliced like salami, or in a can shaped like a tuna can, so you could shave off slices without dumping it out of the can.

Nothing wrong with eating what you like. Spam can be real tasty when done right. Just ask the Hawaiians. They eat more than any other State combined.

Big trend in the culinary world right now is insects, crickets & grasshoppers, etc. being the most popular. High in protein, crunchy, and said to taste nutty. Personally I ain't going to eat them, cook them, or serve them. Insects are something that will NEVER cross my palate. I eat and prepare regular food. And since I'm retired (as of March) I can cook and eat anything I damn well please. And bugs ain't one of 'em!

Spam, done properly, can be downright tasty.
Spam, prepared the way my mom did it... not so much.

Spam occasionally is okay... rest of it? Blech!
Potted meats = peckers and lips.

Spam quality has gone downhill over the years.

Yeah we do. I love all of the canned meats, and agree that Lyoner is good as well.

Germans are the wurst when it comes to canned and cases meats. Greg would be in heaven when he saw the canned frankfurters. Instead of 2 hotdogs in brine, you get like 5 or 6 if I recall.

My husband loves all that stuff! I like corned beef Hash, but none of the rest.
Spam is best on a cube of compressed rice with a strip of dried kelp wrapped around it. I used to get one of those from the shoppette after PT in the morning when I was in Hawaii. They even sell it that way in the movie theaters.

At home, we just heat spam slices in a pan and eat then with scoops of rice and wrap small torn-up pieces of the dried kelp sheets around little scoops of spam and rice to eat it.

Canned barbecue pulled pork is also another great thing when you can find it. Winn Dixie is the only place I ever saw it very often. I used to wrap the stuff in a tortilla with some cheese and nuke it for about 45 seconds for a really good lunch when I ran out of cold cuts.

Canned roast beef is good heated up with some barbecue sauce and eaten over rice.
My wife makes macaroni and spam. Toast the dry mac, throw in a can of tomato sauce, a can of rotel and cubed spam. Boil till ready. Lots of pepper. Good stuff.

Mac and cheese and cubed spam for the win.
I also dice it up REALLY tiny and put it in waffle or hot cake batter.
Works good in fried rice too.
