Handgun or Long Gun?

1472 Views 18 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Headrush
Just wondering which you guys prefer or find yourselves shooting the most. In my younger days I owned and shot shotguns almost exclusively. I didn't buy a handgun until my 30s, and only then because I really loved the 1911. I didn't buy a rifle (although I had access to a couple for hunting) until I was close to 40 because I didn't have much interest in them; but the older I get, the more I find myself drawn to rifles of all types. For the past couple years I've barely touched a handgun except a S&W Model 10 that I keep in the nightstand and my .38 snubby that I CC. I only shoot them enough to stay proficient, and the rest of my shooting now involves rifles.

"I like a handgun. I hold a shotgun in high regard; but rifles -- well, I love the darn things." - Jack O'Connor

This sums up my feelings exactly. However I shoot handguns the most. For two reasons. First, the indoor range I belong to is close by, and while it will handle rifles up to the 460 Weatherby magnum, it is only 25 yards to the berm. Ok for testing or initial sighting, but much too close to be interesting, so I mostly shoot handguns there. Second, because I always have a handgun or two on me. I see that rangevseveral times a week.

I go down to the farm about once a month. There I mostly shoot shotguns and rifles. I can stretch it out there!
I like all, and I would say my favorite thing to shoot just for fun is shotguns, but I tend to shoot handguns most, because the closest place to shoot whenever I want is indoor and pistol calibers only.

I'd shoot the snot out of my rifles IF I had a place to go. They won't let me at the 11yd indoor range I go to, go figure.

I haven't fired my AR in almost 2 years. I can take the 9mm and 22 rifles to the range, but other than just seeing if they still work, what's the point? I envy you folks that live in the wide open spaces.

Long gun for me. Preferably lightweight carbines.
Most platforms are easy to mount optics and put rounds on target out to 100 yards.
I’ll take three points of contact over a handgun every time.
It's called "freedom", folks.

Yes, that's trash, because people suck. But other people that don't suck take care of things, and we can go shoot whatever we want, however we want, for free.

Yep, depending on the range I go to, or if I am alone.
But usually two handguns and two rifles/carbines. Depending on the caliber, 150+ rounds for the handguns and 100+ rounds for the long guns.
Nothing worse than getting into a groove with the firearm and running out of ammo, or having only one pistol or long gun, and it malfunctions or you forgot to bring the magazines, doh!
But my handguns have the highest round count.

That's why I always carry a 50 cal. can full (2500 rnds +) of .22, a 30 cal. can full (500 rnds +) full of .40, and a 30 cal. can full (400 rnds +) full of 5.56 mm in my truck, and at least one weapon to fit each.

Three less things to forget about when loading up for a trip to the range, or WW III, or CW II, which ever comes first....

it all depends for me, some days we do pistol training, low light shooting, dynamic shooting and other stuff just with handguns, some other days we just train with rifles, to be quite frank, i have't use the shotgun much....

I have always leaned toward the revolver. Nothing like a wearing a sixgun in a holster and ammo belt. Rifles and shotguns I usually think of for hunting. But both are fun. I have been blessed to grow up in a family with the opportunity to have both. And was able to help and encourage my family with the same attitude. Unfortunately, today guns are being labeled as evil in our schools, by low life bleeding heart liberals.

Being a retired cop, I tend to lean towards handguns. My personal fav is the Colt 1911 followed very closely by the S&W Model 19. Not to say I don't have long guns. I have one that used to be Mosin Nagant, but all the remains of it is the barrel. I've a Draganov stock on it, a bolt that looks like it was made in the 21st century, and a Timney trigger. A friend of mine hung the Spanish name of "El Brazo de Dios," or "the Arm of God." He did so after hitting a target at 600 meters with it, and did so without a shoulder pad which of course almost made a grown man cry. So I'm not sure if it was because he could hit something so far out, or the intense pain he felt in his shoulder.

I have a lot more long guns than handguns, but I shoot handguns much more. The places to shoot them are closer, they're faster to clean after a range trip, and I'm likelier to turn to one for self defense.

My rifles go out a few times a year, though, because it is fun to spend a day getting reacquainted with the ones I haven't used in a while. The shotgun gets some time doing sporting clays once in a while, too. There's nothing like shooting a clay rabbit rolling along the ground and then transitioning to hit a low-flying clay with a pump gun.

i try to be an equal opportunity plinker. i clean all my firearms at least 4 times a year on top of after range trips, if i've cleaned any, more than 3 times without firing them, they get added to the next range trip. and like moonz i always take a little of this and that every time i go for some "grouping therapy"

Is he related to Moonzy?

Seriously...real rifles kick, always have. People need to learn how to shoot the things, and maybe they'll quit crying like little girls.

Try an FR8. 8 lbs and .308, in an old style stock that's been shortened to make it recoil even more.

While I prefer to shoot rifle, I don't always get a chance to go out to the blm. Also, the last time I went to where I usually go they had blocked it all off to keep people out. I am a member at an indoor range that max's at 30yds so I take my rifles to sight in and I take my 22 rifles there, but mostly I shoot handguns. We do have a City range that stretches out to 1000yds, but I just hate the cease fires every 10 mins for 5 mins. Although, It makes your ammo last longer. HaHa
Fortunately I can shoot on my property anytime and I shoot AR10 mostly and AR15 and bolt action centerfire rifles and 45acp, 10mm and 357 mag pistols and I like traditional style big bore smokepoles
