Hi-Cap Mags - the sticky

Ok, lets create a difinative Hi cap thread so we can avoid the weekly "what about hi cap mags" threads that seem to pop up time after time.

1. Pro mag 15 rounders are sketchy at best. some members have made them work by modifying the feed lips. ive had zero luck with them. buy at your own risk.

2. the 30 round drum mag that rumors persist about doesnt exist. period. its just rumors.

3. The suomi drum modification has yet to be built and function properly with a HP. Several memebrs have built them (myself included) with no success. there are too many obstacles to overcome in this conersion.

4. double stack mags would require a mojor stock redesign and beemailler has already stated thats not on the table.

5. if you can create a working, reliable magazine of 30 rounds or more, and it is proven by a mod or admin of this board, you will be declared a demi-god and money will fall into your hands in mass quantities (mostly from members here).

ahh, i see, so they didn't add a mag extension to the 8 rounder after all. Here I was thinking I had an easy 12 rounder option :(

Anyone ever tried this 40 rounder? User ratings seem decent on it...

Always seems to be out of stock though.

Ok thanks SW. The thread I was reading from Coyote Ugly was for a different drum I thought??? Is there a different one?
The Kel-Tec Sub 2000 is designed to accept the hi cap glock mags why can't hp do something like that? Kel-Tec Sub 2000 is in the same price range.

Small companies make easy targets. By limiting mags to >10, they don't run any risk of coming up on the wrong agency's radar for hi-cap mags. Some states, like mine, have tricky regulations on mags over a capacity of 10.

I don't know for sure if this is Hi-Point's exact reasoning, but I have a strong feeling it is.

I understand that, even the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 comes with a 10rd mag, but the option is there for those who want a hi cap. mag that works...slap a 33rd glock mag into the gun , just sayin'.

and the kel tec was deswgined POST-ban so there were no limitations. the HP was desgined DURING the ban, wherin even R&D of hi cap mags could land you in federal prison.

Has anyone tried the Suomi 9mm stick mags? I was looking online and it seems to me that that would be an easier conversion than the drum. It may not be 50-75 bullets spewing out of your barrel, but it's 36 rounds. I don't have my hands on one to look at and compare, but they seem cheap enough on CTD.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the dimensions compared to a hi point magazine?
Mason has one. I'll ask him.
I've got a Suomi and have drums and sticks. I don't see how you could convert it to work in the 995 since it's a double stack mag. You still run into that problem of having to go from single stack to double stack. I suppose if you welded a 995 mag to the top of it and just left 10 extra rounds in the mag that would never actually feed into the weapon it would be doable, albeit very unweildly and odd-looking. Probably wouldn't last long either as previous attempts to weld onto the HP mags haven't gone too well because of the type of metal.
After reading the entire thread, I do have a few questions...

1. Would an increased capacity mag ultimately require a redesign of the pistol body, due to it's current configuration not allowing for increasing the size of the mag well?
2. If it means a redesign, could that be the reason that they haven't come out with it yet?

My thoughts are that the ProMag magazines are manufactured with a slight defect in 'release location'. If some people are saying that you have to REALLY push the mag up into the mag well, and doing so leads to jams and other events...that signals to me that there is a minor adjustment that could be done to make it work better.

If you look at the 9mm pistol mag (or any factory HP mag) you notice a slight outdent about 1/2 way down on the right side of the mage (right side is the side to the right when the mag is inside the mag well). It was stamped into place at the factory. if the height is too low, that would signal why the promag mags need to be forcefully pushed up into the well. It may be possible to shave that lip to allow less force needed to insert and lock the mag into place. Has anyone tried doing that? If so, how well has it worked?? If it still didn't work as well as a factory mag, is it something that Promag could be made aware of so that they may tweak their assembly???

Food for thought!

These guns were designed during the Clinton ban. Having to redesign their entire product line is definitely why they don't have standard capacity magazines available.
I wonder why they don't develop other models then? Making a carbine like the SUB-2000 which uses other brand mags would be an option. They sell 10-rounders with it and the aftermarket sells the hi-caps. At this point it would seem designing a new grip with a larger mag well would be easier.

and it all comes back to development cost. the market already has several competitors in that vien, and HP would be paddling upstream to try and enter it.

you heard--you bought-it works- that's it brother------ THANK YOU HIGHPOINT !
I used to work with a German machinist. If I wanted something figured out and made reality, all I had to say was "Otto, I don't think you can do this." His bottom lip would portrude sightly, he would go silent, and in a short time he would return with the finished product. Damn I miss that man. No one else like that out there? A huge market awaits with bales of cash for you :)

Those days are long gone.

They should (and need to in my opinion) develop their line to fit one magazine type that is common (Glock seems to be the most popular but it could just as easliy be S&W or Springfield for example).

The Hi Point Magazines are less than stellar to be euphimistic.
