    I guess I was speaking to the specifics.

    Almost always, before starting a new thread about a current event, I clicked "new posts" and check to see if there wasn't a thread about the given topic

    I always wondered if others did that, or what method they used

    Exactly! So, it isn't really free at all IMO.
