Not to hi-jack this thread but I know I might be able to do a roadtrip to get the CCW..qbn, keby, and myself..there's three so far and $75 or $100 for a 12 hour day is good with me..I have 1 day of vacation left. again, sorry for going off point in this thread.
I'd love to, but my wife and I are going to take the class together and a 12-hour day is too much for her. You might be able to find a few other people to go though, it would be very cool if there was an Ohio HPFF CHL event even if I couldn't attend.

qbn, what kind of flack are you getting? are they getting upset because of the 'a-hole' thing? i'm with you on that one. I'm willing to put up with some abuse when taking a CCW course because I just know that there are a lot of gun nuts out there who can be....shall we say 'opinionated'. But I wouldn't want my wife to have to deal with that.

Got this: "Honestly I would be hesitant to subject other students to your attitude."

And this guy:
The whole idea of taking a class is to be educated by someone who knows what they are talking about. A .22 is not really suitable for defense, you really want to go with something bigger (at least 9mm, I prefer .40S&W). If she "can't handle" the higher caliburs, maybe she needs some practice. She is going to want to practice and be proficient anyway if she is going to carry/defend herself. My girlfriend is built like a twig and she handles both of my .40S&W's just fine. The instructor is going to give you recommendations on weapon selection, calibur, etc, that's the whole point. You can't go into it with a closed mind on what you already know or think you know or else you won't learn anything.

Who cares if the instructor is an a-hole or is opinionated? All that matters is that you pass and you get the little piece of paper that says you completed the training so you can get your CHL. I found your comment about "ignorant political discussion" especially humorous. Who is ignorant? The people who care about their rights and talk about it, or the ones that don't care enough about it to even have a discussion?

Good luck finding a trainer that can put up with YOUR attitude.
I think some of them thought I was a "liberal" or Obama supporter because of my desire to avoid political discussion.

I was going to do October but I think the classes are next week which is my birthday week and I'm going on a camping trip so I didn't want to do it then. I'll probably be doing it next month as well. My friend and I were probably going to take the class together. Let me know what dates you pick and I'll probably be there.

I did a one day 12hr class in cleveland with these people http://commencefire.com . Most of em are cleveland leo. They were very patient with all the newbies. Half the class were women. Most of the class had never owned or shot a handgun before. Nobody left the class with any complaints, & I would recommend them to anyone near cleveland.

As much as I'd love to put on a class for HPFF members there's one issue I forgot about. It's up to your local sheriff's dep't to ensure that people are taking legitimate courses. And some have been using that as latitude to not accept CCW applications. So I'd say the best thing you can do before you take a class is call the sheriff who will be issuing your ccw and make sure he accepts your potential instructor's credentials. People have had problems with non-local classes for that reason and I think it's a valid one. The sheriffs want to make sure that people are getting quality instruction and not paying to have a certificate mailed from across the state.
