Is your gun shop taking advantage of the so-called "Panic"?

Sure I go to gun shows like most enthusiasts, but when it come to serious buying, I prefer to deal with people I know will be around when I need them. I do most of my shopping/buying at 4 out of the 6 shops in the Lake City area. I look at the other two from time to time, but prices seem inflexible. I was in my "most" favorite yesterday morning to pick up a used Hi-Point 995 carbine to do an ATI project, and by 9 am he was jammed with buyers. My wife had dropped me off to go to her nearby Quilt shop, so I had some jawjacking time to spend. By my 11 o'clock departure, I saw at least 5 guns go out the door, and still lots of folks seriously shopping. The owner/gunsmith and his son were busier than the proverbial one-armed paper hanger, selling, demoing, writing-up etc., while his wife and sister were calling in to the Feds. I have bought 3 guns from him since Dec, (1873 Carbine, Stevens 22 and the HP)(plus sold him 2) and his prices are fair, selection great and his personal touch, unmatchable. I saw shelves of ammo at last year's prices, reloading supplies & accessories everywhere. So, there are still good guys out there who are not trying to take advantage of the panic and these are the shops that will still be thriving after the panic is over. I won't advertise him here but if anybody wants to know who this is, just look up gun shops in Mayo, Florida or PM me. So, how is your favorite dealer treating you?

Thats funny Im seeing both here in Salt Lade Buckeye. Hell were probably competing against each other on guns and ammo. lol....
we have one shop that jacked his prices to the moon, one who had amodest increase and one who left it mostly alone. guess who i buy from.

they JUST opened a dunhams here in my town. until then there was only 1 shop (3 stores all by the same name) that sold guns besides wal mart. everything in that store went up radically. even the used guns that sat on the shelf for what seems like years are still there but with new price tags.

the sad part is, i have to buy from there or wal mart (ammo only). they are the closeest thing for 45 miles in any direction.

even more sad? dunhams gun prices are through the ROOF. when is it going to end?
It will end when people stop stockpiling and hoarding.
Where and when will it end, you ask? It depends on us, the buyers. If we go into a gun shop that is overcharging then POLITELY tell the owner, not an employee, that until prices come down to a reasonable level, YOU will be buying elsewhere or not at all. If he say his suppliers are raising their prices to him, so be it...sympathize with him, but walk out empty-handed. We all can suffer though many, many months of not buying anything from shops that are taking unfair advantage. Guns are NOT a necessity, all you need is one for home, one for the cars, one each for yourself & the spouses and then stop. Pick your model and stick with it. You can only shoot one at a time. Reduce the amount of ammo you use for practice, in other words, CUT BACK! When guns sit in the racks, when ammo gets dusty on the shelves, when reloading supplies don't sell, believe me the stores will take notice. The suppliers will take notice. The manufacturers will take notice. When any production exceeds the demand, prices drop...that is the historical way of free enterprise. <WARM YELLOW PUPPIES> may try to force socialism down our throats, but it will not succeed.

<Racial epithet deleted>. Keep on working for 2012 so we can get back to normalcy in our lives. But, in the meantime, start using some common sense when it comes to buying guns and ammo. Don't be sucked in...Remember, NO ONE is coming to your house and take your guns and ammo...it just will not happen, regardless of the naysayers. And if by some misfortune the Government decides to call everything in....just don't go! Dig a hole and bury everything until later. Remember, this too will pass...Look at England, Australia, Canada...the populous is screaming mad. They will eventually elect representatives that listen to them.

Just the view from my saddle, as Colonel Dan sez....

We have one shop in town and one only. I refuse to do business with them. I will drive twenty miles to a much better shop. On their marquee that sits out front, It says. Guns and Ammo, get them while you can. So that tells you what kinda business they run.
man, if everyone just got a c&r lic, and just ordered bulk from SOG or Century arms....you could just cut out the middle man. payback for price gouging.

i just ordered a 1000 rd case of wolf blackbox 762x39 for $194.

you can buy 9mm federal american eagle for $10 a box, with a 200rd minimum.

there. no one has any reason to get ripped off. you can walk back into the price gougers store and offer to sell him some ammo since he cant seem to find it at a reasonable price to sell to the public, LOL.

Wait.... you can get bulk discounts on ammo with a C&R???? REALLY????
yeah. not from everywhere, but there are a few that will. shipping sucks, so a case really the only way to go. screw walmart, LOL.
crap, i think i might have just unleashed the hording public on my ammo source. never mind, everyone just keep going to walmart, LOL. nothin to see here. move along.

seriously though, most of the time its milsurp and wolf. lotta weird calibers, but usually 762x39, 9mm, and 308.

and the entire line of wolf. and barnaul. and i think century has hotshot. i haven't received my march flier yet, lol.
I really like my local gun shop, a bunch of good guys and great prices.

I can get the American Eagle 9mm ammo here for $10 per 50 round box and don't need c&r nor bulk buy, it's the everyday price.

I also bought holsters, mag grip extensions, sleeves all cheaper than online. I pay 13.95 per lb for Bullseye or Unique.

He has Ruger 10/22's in stock, NIB for $185 as of the other day.
im surrounded by gun nuts, price gougers and walmarts that are perpetually out of ammo., LOL.

"He has Ruger 10/22's in stock, NIB for $185 as of the other day"

thats a GREAT price on a ruger. ive never seen one under $220.
I have my little shop that has enough ammo for what I do with it.  I've seen panic come and go in several different countries with several different results.  I refuse to shop at Wal-Mart for MANY reasons, the panic induced idiots who are uneducated about even the most economic basics who are so easily whipped into a hoarding frenzy without taking stock of other resources in their area are one reason.  Wal-Mart caters to such a "crowd" and thrives on it.

I'm all about options, but to me Wal-Mart has never been an option.  I have shopped there ONCE this month and I am still kicking myself for it, simply because it was the only place to buy spray paint at a late hour. I will avoid spending my money to destroy the US economy there any day of the week, and gladly support local dealers and other establishments who are more supportive of the communities they serve. Wal-Mart doesn't care about the shooting community, but your local dealer DOES! Well, the one who doesn't price gouge you that is.

I'll work my brain out and get what fits my needs in many other ways.

Tip of the day: Talk to your local shops and see if they have a Facebook or Twitter account.  Many clerks will "Tweet" their regular customers when new shipments of stuff come in.  Works for me

He asked me to spread the word on the Rugers as he has about twenty of them sitting there. If anyone is interested and in Central PA just pm me and I'd be happy to supply the name address and phone number as I don't beleive the forum would allow me to post it.
We have one shop in town, and he is really a sporting goods store. Selection is limited, but the prices are fair for this area.
He gets 90% of my firearm purchases. He doesn't seem to be trying to take advantage.
The closest real gun shop is 35 miles away in the "big city" and I have always felt that they gouge for firearm prices. They don't sell powder,
and I have only seen primers there once. Ammo prices are comparable to Gander M, which is still closer to me.
I have gone to Gander M for powders and primers, but that is only because of limited availability. They are the only powder seller within 30
miles, that is open for business when I can get in there. Their firearm prices are too high, and their ammo is often higher than the local shop. Again availability local is limited. Local shop only sells black powder.
I think the 22$ Haz-Mat fee to order over the web is insane, and drives the price of ordering too high.
I ordered primers and powder from Wideners a month ago, in stock items, and finally received an email Friday, that UPS has received the shipping info, but they still don't have the shipment. I won't order from them again. I'll drive the 40 miles to a shop that sells the items and eat the gas/time. Probably have to burn a personal day from work to catch them open.
My local WalMart has been totally out of ammo for pistols for two months. None. My daughter works in the bank inside the store,
and tells me she has not seen any hit the shelf in the entire time.

I'm "touching" this thread because it has a nice tip on potentially getting ammo at a lower price.

Peace favor your sword,
