Was awakened last night around midnight by the police who informed us that our daughter had been involved in a domestic dispute. Threats had been made against both families, mine and his, as well as the police. They told us the SIL was armed and they had set up a staging area in a parking lot down the road. Asked up to leave with them. The daughter was safe, and was already at the staging area.

I thought it was interesting that they said we did not have to, but they highly advised it. We left following a deputy car with another trailing. Just a couple of minutes later his father arrived the same way, escorted by deputies. The daughter Was being cared for by paramedics. She was not shot, but the gun had been put by her head and fired. She allowed them to take hair because of the powder residue. She denied further treatment than what the paramedics provided.

The SIL went into a dense stand of pines near the house. They tracked him by pinging his phone. He appeared to be moving around in them. They were apprehensive about going in after him because he knew the woods. I cautioned them that the pines were very thick and they could be on him before they ever saw him. Another thing I found interesting was that I overheard that the pings could be off by as much as 600 yards. I thought they would be way more accurate than that.

They had a dog that I figured would send in, but It became unnecessary as about 4 am he came out of the woods and peaceably surrendered.

Holy shit Greg!!!

First of all I'm glad she is safe! Is this a pattern of behavior thats been building? Or is it out of left field? Does he suffer from ptsd or tbi?
My prayers go out to all involved. I hope things work out, however that has to be!
Thanks.

And this is way out of character. He has always been a pleasant person to be around.

Does the department not have thermal vision.
I have no idea what they have. There were 7 cars there last night, plus the rescue squad. Some of the cars were from the closest town about 10 minutes away. That probably accounted for the entire departments from both the town and the county. Yes, we are that small.

Sounds like SAS. Stupid Alcohol Syndrome. Has he been jailed before?

One thing I meant to ask is, is he having a hard time finding work? Money problems is usually the #1 cause of domestic crap. I've had a few arguments with ex-wives and I never got violent with them. Only one got stupid and I stood there and took the punches. Her 25yo daughter was there to witness it.

How much did she contribute to the situation is a good question. She might need to talk to someone outside the family to understand what happened, and how things might need to play out, or be handled in the near and distant future.

No work issues. He owns a landscaping business. It's his busy time of the year and he is working 6 days a week and just recently bought new equipment and hired a new worker. No history that I know of. Always been pleasant to be around. There has been issues between his dad and him recently that I found out about last night but they would not elaborate. Alcohol was involved.

Glad no one got physically hurt. Hope things get handled in ways that take care of issues for the good of everyone involved.

Really glad he had enough control left to not shoot her. But there is NO WAY I’d let him ever have another chance to lose control like that, while anywhere near my daughter, regardless of fault, who said what, or any other supposedly mitigating circumstance.

If he gets on the news/or word gets around his landscaping business is going to take a big shit and that may trigger more drinking. Plus since he threatened his dad he is possibly going to be homeless. He'll have multiple restraining orders on him.

Be careful Greg.

Something snapped.
He'll get his guns taken, at least the ones they know about.
He may have one or two stashed.
It's important he understands your family is not the enemy.
Be careful and best wishes.
Time to send the HPFF squad.

No worries there. Steps have already been taken. He will not be allowed to be near my daughter, his dad, or any of my family.

Sad situation but his problems don’t need to be yours.

That was going to be my own suggestion. The arrangement needs to be permanent. Discharging a firearm next to a loved one's head is unpardonable.

I wish your daughter the best. She is in the worst position of everyone involved. May she heed your counsel and be safe, never again to be alone with that ticking time bomb, potentially murderous husband of hers. When he pointed a gun at her head, he lost the privilege of having compassion or sympathy for his problems from anyone.

My only concern health wise is hearing loss. She said the gun was quiet, but she remembers the "fire" (muzzle flash). Adrenaline will do wondrous things, such as hide loud noises. But she is fine she says.

Wow. Greg you're handling this a lot better than I would. I'm glad your daughter's safe, that you're safe, and that everyone is still alive.

I say this because I have a friend whose son went off the deep end in an eerily similar fashion. Unfortunately this young man ultimately decided to resolve the issue by taking his life with a shotgun outside the girl's house. Very scary, and very, very tragic.

Again, very glad all are safe.

We all say that. It doesn't make it true.
