Yeah how great $4500 well up to $4500 depending on what you're trading and its fuel economy...not actual what the govt says it is. Intersesting and why I say its an agenda..its not about driving new car sales or even getting better fuel economy. Have you read whats required by the dealer if they take a car in trade under this? The car has to be driveable for you to trade it but once thats done the dealer has to scrap it and also disable the engine..the recommended procedure? Drain the oil and run several quarts of sodium silicate through it heat and evaporation depositing sodium silicat on the engines lubricating system thereby seizing the engine. Then the title must be stamped "junk automobile, cars.gov" to get reimbursement. So this is why I say its an agenda and a way to get older cars off the road even if you aren't ready to or don't want to buy a new one, the salvage yards aren't allowed to sell engines or whole drivetrains even though they can part out the rest of the vehicle..so sorry if your 93 (or whatever year)engine takes a crap in a year or 2 there may be no replacements to be found and you'll be forced to buy a govt motors dream car. This administration redefines insidious IMO.

Well what would you expect from a bill written by Bruton Smith, who just so happens to own quite a few auto dealerships?

Re: "Cash for clunkers" another agenda scam

I didn't like the fact that they were going to kill my poor baby (99 Ford Ranger XLT...RIP little buddy...), especially since the engine was still perfectly good. I couldn't justify spending the amount it was going to cost to fix all the electrical problems so I traded it in on the CFC program ($4500 vs $750). I bought a Toyota though lol. No Obama-motors for me.

Well yes 47_Mason_47 but my point was not about the new cars or what brand you buy..it was this little scheme to remove the used car options whether you want to or not. Congrats on the new car but it is really sad isn't it that the engine in your ranger might have kept someone from having to go into debt for a new vehicle or get rid of a truck they like , but because of this program destroying it it won't.

Indeed. The whole point of it is to get most of the older inefficient vehicles off the road. That's what I didn't like about turning my truck in, I'm sure someone could have used those parts...but for that amount of money I don't think I could sleep at night if I hadn't turned it in. I guess that's how they get you.

Carbon reduction bribe, I guess the 3 billion chinese are going to reduce their carbon "footprint" too? You think the US caused environmental damage, mark my words, in 20 years China will be the biggest environmental disaster we have ever seen, it will make the US industrial revolution look like earth day.

The engines of TRADE IN CLUNKERS will be destroyed. But it is to STOP THE GREEDY from trying to resell those sames cars back into the program so that another tax credit can be applied in which dealerships would pass around vehicles that give back the highest payoff return.

I know what you are going to say, But you have to have ins for a year and the car has to be tagged for a year.

Yeah, and noone can get around those. Right?

Noone is killing the used car market. They are simply putting in a measure that keeps those cars turned in from being shuffled around in a shell game.
You don't have to trade in your clunker either. it's something you can do if you choose to do it.

I personaly think the CARS plan is a bad idea because people who are trading in the cars are generally doing so under the idea of saving money on fuel efficiency, but the reality of taking on a NEW higher interest rate loan, to save 38cents on gas isn't financially sound. Going into debt for the potential of saving tens of cents, or maybe $500 a year when you are paying out $2000 a year in new interest is just rediculous.

BUT it serves 3 purposes. It advances fuel efficiency as a primary focus of purchasing automobiles, which moves the whole market in one direction not unlike the 70's.
It puts NEW money back into dealers hands and auto makers hands and modestly stimulates the economy from insurance to aftermarket purchases of pine tree scenters hanging off of rearview mirrors,.
And thirdly, people feel better and more confident when they have a new'er new'ish car. They will drive a little more. show it off. Spend a little more by roadtrips and visiting friends to show the new car. Thus increasing consumer confidence that things are getting better because people "have new stuff".

For the country, it's a low impact boost that doesn't put too much money in anyones hands. and so for some people who can't actually GET a new car because they have credit issues, CARS almost gurantees you can get a new car.

And you can buy a USED car with the CARS credit. I actually talked to the dealer about trading my 2001 v8 triton expedition for a 1999 Maxda light pickup, AND a 2006 Dodge Caliber. They said it was no problem, but to buy two cars on one credit I had to have a second buyer, or coborrower and another $1230 to add to the downpayment. I decided against it because my insurance would have gone up $60 a month to add the light pickup.
So go to a dealership and ask some questions guys.

You are all smart guys! I've read other posts.

Interest free for 2 years FTW (how long it will take me to pay mine off).

And no, the CARS program does not apply to used vehicles.

Straight from the CARS.gov website:
Consumers will be able to take advantage of this program and receive a $3,500 or $4,500 discount from the car dealer when they trade in their old vehicle and purchase or lease a new one.
Also, if you read the 136 page document it describes in there how only new cars apply.

Just clearing that up :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that certain individual dealerships may give you the same amount that the CARS program would have towards a used vehicle, but they will not receive the money from the government for those.

They're not "clunkers" and the govt doesn't use that description..I didn't say it was killing the used car market I said it was killing the used parts market, although a by-product of that will eventually be the used car market IMO. Look if it's an issue with someone trying to scam as you say once you make it a salvage title that will solve that. The only reason to destroy the engine is so that it can't be used to keep another car of the same year and make running. You can believe what you want to about it but thats my opinion of what they're doing. Also you say go talk to a dealership in the same post you accuse dealerships of running shell games and getting "around" things , so why would a dealership be a credible source of info?

Doesn't matter how old it is or what your actual mpg is they go by the ratings as if it just rolled out the door. Go to cars.gov to find out more about your particular vehicle.

If the gov't MPG rating is higher than 18 it isn't eligible. Since it's a car (and not a Viper or something) I'd guess they'll probably rate it 22 or so. My Ranger got 12MPG and the gov't rated it at 16, so apparently they are a bit wishful in the MPG something gets.

just wait, next they will have declining revenue from less gas being sold, so they will raise the gs tax because they are not collecting as much.
