Yeah how great $4500 well up to $4500 depending on what you're trading and its fuel economy...not actual what the govt says it is. Intersesting and why I say its an agenda..its not about driving new car sales or even getting better fuel economy. Have you read whats required by the dealer if they take a car in trade under this? The car has to be driveable for you to trade it but once thats done the dealer has to scrap it and also disable the engine..the recommended procedure? Drain the oil and run several quarts of sodium silicate through it heat and evaporation depositing sodium silicat on the engines lubricating system thereby seizing the engine. Then the title must be stamped "junk automobile, cars.gov" to get reimbursement. So this is why I say its an agenda and a way to get older cars off the road even if you aren't ready to or don't want to buy a new one, the salvage yards aren't allowed to sell engines or whole drivetrains even though they can part out the rest of the vehicle..so sorry if your 93 (or whatever year)engine takes a crap in a year or 2 there may be no replacements to be found and you'll be forced to buy a govt motors dream car. This administration redefines insidious IMO.

Well yes 47_Mason_47 but my point was not about the new cars or what brand you buy..it was this little scheme to remove the used car options whether you want to or not. Congrats on the new car but it is really sad isn't it that the engine in your ranger might have kept someone from having to go into debt for a new vehicle or get rid of a truck they like , but because of this program destroying it it won't.

They're not "clunkers" and the govt doesn't use that description..I didn't say it was killing the used car market I said it was killing the used parts market, although a by-product of that will eventually be the used car market IMO. Look if it's an issue with someone trying to scam as you say once you make it a salvage title that will solve that. The only reason to destroy the engine is so that it can't be used to keep another car of the same year and make running. You can believe what you want to about it but thats my opinion of what they're doing. Also you say go talk to a dealership in the same post you accuse dealerships of running shell games and getting "around" things , so why would a dealership be a credible source of info?The engines of TRADE IN CLUNKERS will be destroyed. But it is to STOP THE GREEDY from trying to resell those sames cars back into the program so that another tax credit can be applied in which dealerships would pass around vehicles that give back the highest payoff return.

Doesn't matter how old it is or what your actual mpg is they go by the ratings as if it just rolled out the door. Go to cars.gov to find out more about your particular vehicle.straighten me out here...
i have a 1990 chrysler fifth ave. it has an original aaverage 21mpg. rating from its production of year of 1990, (now it is 20 years old and gets maybe 15 mpg),,,,
am i able to take advantage of this 'cash for clunkers'??

Wow they blew through a billion of our tax dollars to subsidize more people who probably shouldn't be getting a new car anyway (remember fannie mae?) already? Well hell I'm sure they'll requisition some more ,never fear you'll be rewarded for being irresposible and responsible people who could use the parts to stay out of debt will still get the shaft in the long run I'm sure. Of course they'll point to how "wildly successful" this scam is. Just go out and use that "free money" and keep letting them think they are on the right track. I love how the story says its a pivot point to economic recovery...sure more people going into debt...thats what we need for long term helath of the economy.

Also these are the geniuses who are going to run healthcare who didn't do the simple math to figure out 1 billion dollars spread over 20000 dealerships works out to the neighborhood of 12 cars per dealership. So god help you if they are the same ones allocating healthcare spending.
