there's really no reason for this post. i just thought you guys might enjoy some gratuitous gun porn

i considered putting this in the "other brands of firearms" forum, but my AMD 65 is my "go-to" battle rifle system, which i chose for the specific purpose of a survival scenario. i'll leave it up to the mods whether to relocate the thread or not

without further ado...

as per forum regulations, i made sure to include my toes in this picture (that should keep shooter z happy)

i purchased the rifle from atlantic firearms and it came with a 20rnd promag (the "waffle" kind, not the transparent.) i paid a bit less than the sticker price because i originally ordered a nodak spud kit gun, but was upgraded to the factory-built FEG when atlantic changed their stock
i think i would've been perfectly happy with the nodak spud, but i love my FEG :yay!:

here it is with a korean-made 40rnd mag from ATI. i've heard people say that you can't fit 40rnd mags into the AMD 65's because the forward pistol grips get in the way, but they fit mine with no trouble at all. maybe it's the wooden grips that people have trouble with?

the FEG has a chrome-lined, heavy mil-spec barrel. that was a must for me, because i envision scenarios in which i may not be able to clean the gun and may have to rely on corrosive mil-surp ammo. it's a stamped receiver, but thicker than the average (WASR 10's, etc)

i'll admit this is my first and only rifle so i don't have much basis for comparison but, IMESHO, it's an excellent rifle. i've put about three hundred rounds through it so far without a hiccup. there was no "break-in" period. it's as smooth and reliable as a fine german wristwatch. all the parts fit together tightly with no rattling and the finish has been quite resilient so far

here it is with a hungarian mil-surp 30 rounder and some barnaul JHPs

the AMD 65 is the centerpiece of my fledgling arsenal. i'll admit that price was a big consideration but, honestly, even if i had all the money in the world i think i might've made the same choice

i can't see the logic in blowing three grand on an uber AR-15 system when, in a SHTF scenario, there will most likely be plenty of genuine select-fire M16's ripe for the picking. i can always upgrade on the fly if i need to

the beauty of the AMD 65 (and all AK variants) is it's reliability in all conditions. this thing doesn't know the meaning of the word "jam." also, its short barrel and folding stock make it somewhat concealable. i could probably hump it around in a large bug-out-bag without drawing too much unwanted attention

modifications:

so far, i've replaced the factory synthetic pistol grip with one of these and it was a huge improvement! i've also installed a recoil buffer from blackjack buffers. i don't know what an AK47 feels like without a recoil buffer in it and i don't intend to find out because i want this sucker to stand the test of time. the action cycles just fine

as for optics, a red dot sight is the obvious choice, and i've chosen aimpoint over eotech for the longer battery life and ability to cover the lenses, but i haven't decided how to mount it yet

i'm not sure i want to go with an ultimak rail, because it could transfer heat from the gas tube to my optic. but i'd love to have the ability to co-witness with the irons in case the optic fails

these scout mounts would seem to eliminate the heat problem, but would also eliminate my ability to co-witness :(

luckily i've got plenty of time to think about this problem, because i'm broke right now anyway

i'm thinking about replacing the forward pistol grip with a different one or removing it entirely. i've considered drilling holes in the very front of the vented lower handguard and attaching one of these babies, but i almost feel like "why bother?" maybe i'll just leave the factory synthetic foregrip

i definitely want to keep the lower handguard. it would be nice to have a lower picatinny rail, but this is a survival tool - i don't want any flimsy aluminum crap on it

i'd be more than grateful for any advice you guys have on how i could mod this rifle further. but keep in mind i'm going for practical survival function, not "tacticool" junk

what do you think? is she sexy or what? 8)

There is TWO things wrong in your pics!
However I am sure they have been corrected by now.

First, the Mags are still in the wrappers. \
Second, the mags do not appear to be loaded. This may just be the angle of the mags but either way still need to be corrected. :p :)

Jokes man.

Nice piece, Me like.

Nine Inch Nails....Man those are some LLLLOOOONNNGGG toes you got there....finger toes! Nice gun!
in kazakhstan we have saying, "man with long toes have long hram" 8)

i am now extremely jealous.
mission accomplished

Second, the mags do not appear to be loaded.
i keep the 20rnd promag loaded 24/7 for HD. i didn't wanna leave the rest of them loaded cause i was afraid the constant tension would wear out the springs

i know you're just joking, but maybe it would be smart to keep all of them loaded. hmmm...

Just a side note.

The springs do not wear from being compressed they wear do to compression cycles.

So don't be worried about leaving them loaded.

Second side note that you don't need to worry about.
Cheap Springs can give at any time. :p :)

yeah everybody says the promags suck so i was expecting it to from the beginning but it hasn't given me any trouble at all yet. i've fired the 20rnd promag empty four or five times so far and it works fine. i'm gonna trust it until it gives me a reason not to

also, i need to get u.s. made followers and floorplates for my steel mags before they're legal in the gun

i'm not sure exactly how many 922r compliant parts this sucker has, but i know atlantic ships them with promags for a reason

question on the folding stock, does it feel strong enough? i always thought those kind of looked weak. i've only ever shot the AK on the original wood stock

pretty much. it was given to me as a box of partially welded parts. i just finished er up and used it as a n exemplar of how badly an AK can be built and still function.

it's sturdier than it looks, but it's somewhat uncomfortable. the butt-plate is very narrow

welcome to teh AMD club. ive own the infamous "franken AMD".

i saw that in the "ugly guns" thread. i'm jealous

is that thing registered as a pistol or AOW?

awesome porn survivalist :p

I have a question though..did those hold down straps in the case come standard with it?
i think so, but i bought it used so i can't be sure. it's a winchester double rifle case

ive got nearly the same case, but the smaller version for my amd! first pic is with original wood grips, second is its current config - hogue grip rear, black classic grip up front. the pa-63 gets more use nowadays, with 9x18mm being $9.99/box50 its cheaper to shoot. still need grips for it, the stock plastic is painful...

the scout scopes mount is great, and the rail can be removed to use iron sights without removing the whole mount. i have turned the rail around to point backwards and get the sight closer to my face for a larger sight picture, with no stability issues...solid as a rock.

dont mind the rust on the drum and 2nd 30rnd'er (both romanian, the other 30rnd mag is bulgarian), i noticed it when the flash hit these pics and it's since been removed. also refinished the wood grips, got them down to bare wood and put 20 coats of polymerized linseed oil on them, then decided they were too nice to look at and not comfy enough so i swapped them out and put them in a safe place in case for some horrible reason i ever decide to sell it.

btw mine is on a DCI receiver (same as noDak)
